The BCG won't come back any farther than when you regularly pull the charging handle. The gas key stops it.

Won't matter when the buffer tube (receiver extension) comes off. You will be able to push the take down an pivot pin an wiggle them apart.

    Easier then pulling the barrel.

How did you manage to assemble the bolt to the carrier with the ejector on the wrong side? The bolt and cam pin are supposed to be tapered so that the bolt only goes in the correct way? I wouldn't shoot it until a competent gunsmith has a good look at it.

I'm pretty sure I have an SLR wrench in my box. Not sure if it will fit yours or not, all my builds are 5.56, but you are welcome to it. Pm me an address and I'll get it out as quick as I can.

Dave, I suggest picking up a couple of adjustable wrenches. They are much better than channel locks and less likely to slip causing marks. If you must use channel locks, wrap the part with some decent leather to protect it.

The cam pin and bolt cam pin hole is tapered on every one of mine. My cam pins can not be installed with the bolt 180 out. What make do you have?

Colt's. Some from the seventies if they didn't get lost in the boating accident. I have installed the bolt upside down myself in the past. Caught it before shucking a cartridge in it though.

Ok, I lied. :o (old age you know) You guys made me go dredge up some sunk ARs to check the bolts.

My older Colt bolts can fit the pin either way. The newer M16 bolts look to have peening on one side of the bolt pin hole so that you can only put the pin in one way. I have no idea when I bought these. I imagine someone so inclined can find out when they made the specification changes.

It was just that kind of weekend for me. If it could go wrong, it did. My garage is currently a disaster zone and I just grabbed the most accessible tool that would get the job done. I should have dug my way into the mess to my tool chest, but I was in a pissy mood. Haste makes waste...

Thanks inkd. I've got one on order now, but if it doesn't come through, I'll let you know

all the stuff should be here today or tomorrow and I'm going to try and rebuild it Sunday at my dads (he's got an accessible vise), unless mopar cares to share some of his SOTAR knowledge with the less privileged ;) I didn't have to take the bolt apart, just rotate it around the receiver 180 degrees. It's pulling rounds now no problem, but I'll go through it all again with a closer eye tonight just to make sure.
