Montgomey County tries to hide their pain.
    Press Release

Statement by Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett
    on Amazon

    November 13, 2018

Although Montgomery County was not chosen as the site for Amazon’s second headquarters, we are very pleased that Arlington County will join Long Island City as one of the sites selected. The Arlington location will result in additional jobs, business, and investments – all of which will benefit the entire DC metropolitan region – and Montgomery County.

I want to thank Amazon for selecting us to be on the list of finalists. A special thanks goes to Governor Larry Hogan for his strong support of Montgomery County’s bid. I also appreciate the critical support we received from the Maryland General Assembly, the Montgomery County Council, the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, and our entire local business community.

Montgomery County continues to be one of the best places in America to live, raise a family, grow a business, and build a future. Over the past 12 years we have strengthened our fiscal foundations, eliminated unnecessary red tape, laid the groundwork for new employment centers that will create approximately 100,000 new jobs, and invested even more in transportation options and our world-class school system.

This is a great day for Amazon, for Arlington County, for New York City, and for the entire Washington DC metropolitan region.

So as expected , there is no 'HQ2' They are just adding office space at some locations where they already have staff.
The execs at Amazon must have gotten a kick out of the different governors prostituting themselves in hopes of landing this fat haul.

    Crony capitalism.

    Picking winners and losers.

In an era when politicians pick their constituents, not vice-versa.

If/when Amazon croaks in 20 years after Walmart/Jet or the next big thing takes its place, who's going to clean up the mess aided and abetted by the government?

MAD & I watching the news at 4 and the VA Governor beating his chest on securing Amazon to Crystal City, plus the boost to the local economy.

I told her, imagine a progressive giving a tax cut to the richest man in the world and bragging about trickle-down economics.

Dang, this world never ceased to amaze this oldMan.

If it wasn’t for double standards the progressives wouldn’t have any standards at all!

Amazon Web Services (AWS), is already a $20 billion/year business unit of theirs, and at last check was somewhere around 15x larger than a pile of other cloud services, combined. The cloud and data centers is a huge business for them. But as you've stated, Crystal City would be office space for them; not product distribution or data centers.

JBG Smith began pulling vacant office space out of the rental market recently in preparation of this announcement. Very big deal for JBG Smith.

JBG Smith pretty much owns Crystal City. Lots of happy people there I’m sure.

Real estate prices are skyrocketing now in Arlington. People who are selling property are already jacking up the price on houses and condos 10-20%.

Anyone who has applied to Amazon will tell you, they don't hire anyone who isn't a die hard liberal. I've been questioned about my politics during interviews.

I've interviewed with Amazon and AWS and was never asked about my politics. There are many libertarian minded people that work in AWS. Although majority of the employees are people who likely lean liberal.

There aren't all that many libertarians anywhere. What would draw them to Amazon?

I'm in the tech field and have friends in the tech field as well. In the big 5 tech companies (Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook) majority of the workforce is liberal leaning 65%+.

However, based on my work experience, network, and the friends I've made throughout my tech career, I would reckon the political ideology is 18-20% are libertarian/conservative, the rest are liberals, and small percentage of moderates in tech companies in general.

So yeah most of those west coast tech companies are liberal (they're primarily based in California), but there is significant although silent libertarian/conservative body there. East coast tech company (small-to-mid size) have higher percentage of conservatives than west coast tech companies--personal experience. As for what would draw them to Amazon? Same thing that draws liberal tech professionals: Amazon is an amazing company, high salary, connections, perks/benefits, and the overall opportunity Amazon can provide to a tech professional is a real boost for the career.

I would expect the Amazon HQ2 office in Crystal City would be more conservative (but still overall liberal body) than their campus in Seattle, especially if they recruit more east coast tech professionals.

It would be nice if there was proper research and data collection but I don't know of any reputable study. James Damore ex-Google Engineer discussed this topic more in-depth, read up on him.

Amazon dropping plans for the NY Headquarters...:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

The new young Socialist from New York doesn't seem to want Amazon. How quaint. If I were the CEO of Amazon 1) I'd be paying someone to type this for me, and 2) I'd seriously reconsider Dallas over NY. Eff them.
