There were only about 250 French imported MAS 49s compared to 3,000 Syrian contract MAS 49s. Sadly the French signed onto the UN small arms non-proliferation treaty and destroyed the balance in their inventory. I had a buddy who was an active member of the Gendarme and he pulled a favor with one of the armorers who was tasked with disassembling MAS 49s for destruction. Managed to get him to put aside a couple sets of MAS 49 furniture and some other bits for me in trade for M1 Garand bits that my buddy couldn't find in France.
Luckily for us a large number of MAS 49/56s were released from French army stores before the treaty was signed (reserve units and Gendarme had MAS 49s and held onto them long after the army converted over to the FAMAS).
