I'm looking at buying tickets for a show at the Capitol Threatre in Wheeling.

Looking on line it is really hard to tell what a nice hotel is. I'm trying to find a NICE hotel in the area. Cost doesn't seem to be an issue as most of the hotels are between 50 (I'm guessing awful) and up to 120 a night. 120 a night is fine with me if it is a clean and nice hotel.

What is this area like? Is there stuff to do the day after the show to make a weekend out of? We'd be going up in January as a Christmas gift to my wife.

    Thanks

I passed through there once about 10 years ago.

There's a casino on the island, and next door some manner of steak house, strip joint, and tire place all rolled into one. I'd look at the casino hotel as I don't imagine anything else on the island is particularly fancy. It's a beautiful old area, though. Old industrial, steel everywhere.

I used to stay at the Hampton Inn, when I went to the "Jamboree in the Hills".
It was clean and the rooms were OK, but nothing fancy.

You HAVE to go to the Oglebay Resort and see the winter festival of lights. there is also a "zoo" of sorts there if you have kids.
FYI the festival is over Jan 1 so you may miss that, but it's worth seeing.

And you have to eat at Mehlmans Cafeteria in St Clairsville, maybe 15 mins west of Wheeling.

There is a Cabelas on the hill before you get to Wheeling.

We have stayed at the Days Inn at St. Clairsville both times we've gone to see the light show, with th older girls then last year with our son. Clean and reasonable.

I would couple this with a night in Pittsburgh, honestly. (One night in wheeling for the show, then the other night in Pitt.)

Can’t help on the hotel, yet. I’m going to the theater on Thursday though for the symphony orchestra. GF works in town so she’s supposed to scope out a good dinner spot. I’ll let you know how that goes and keep an eye out for decent hotels close by.

If you stay in Pittsburgh, I highly recommend the "Meat and Potato" restaraunt.

I've been having good stays at the country inn chain if there is one there. Modern rooms, good service, and decent coffee at the breakfast bar.

Wheeling is my hometown and I still have family there. I would recommend you stay at Oglebay Resort for the hotel. That time of year can be kind of slow but there is always Cabelas. TJs sportsgarden is a fun sports bar that will be packed if any games are on.

What things do you guys like to do? I can give you more details if you want.

    Thanks so far.

We will be going to see Jerry Seinfeld do stand up. I'd be looking for a good restaurant before the show and hopefully a nice hotel afterwards. I get everyone's standard of "nice" is different but I don't want a hole in the wall dump. It is a Christmas gift so I don't mind spending up a bit on the hotel to have a good experience.

I figure dinner, show, and maybe a trip to the hotel bar is about the extent of the trip. The next day we'd be back to Western MD with family.

Call Oglebay resort and try for one of their fireplace rooms. Def worth it. Will be nice and fit all of your needs.

Yes Uber does exist. I've used it there a few times. Might have to wait a bit cause I bet they don't have all that many drivers.

Hampton Inn isn't a bad place and TJs is a walk across the street. However it is a standard hotel. Oglebay can be more resort feel if you book the correct room.

I went to the Capitol Theater two weeks ago for the symphony and there were no hotels downtown that stood out as anything I’d want to stay at. I can’t really provide much more than that. Oglebay was always THE place to stay there, but I’m willing to bet it’s in dire need of some updates at this point.

As for dinner, check out Center Street Market area. We ate at Wheeling Brewing Company and the food and beers were excellent. I had the twin filets and they were perfect. There seemed to be another restaurant or two on the block that looked decent but I can’t speak to those.

I used to visit that area when I was younger. If you like little pizza shops then DiCarlos on Main St in Wheeling was always good. The Cabelas is cool. I believe they had a big pond in the middle when I was there 10-12 years ago.

No advice for the places to stay.

Thanks. We got one of the "better" looking rooms at Oglebay's. I'm not expecting a 5 star resort but when they are charging 150 and plenty of others are 39.99 I'm hoping we are headed in the right direction.

Admittedly I've turned into a bit of a hotel snob but I think we have to be realistic at some point.

I’m confident Oglebay will be nice. Just not “brand new, modern nice.” Just a hunch, as I haven’t actually been there in a LONG time.

I may actually try to grab tickets for that show too.

Did the in-laws 50th there a few years back, and you’ll not be disappointed with oglebay. And a class reunion in a cabin in the early 00’s. Food was good in the restaurant.

Price may be a little higher than a road side joint but it is nice.

Lots of deer to take pics of. Around dawn and dusk. Drive carefully. THEY ARE THICK!
