    Hi

I'm looking for some moving advice specifically for my parents. I'm a only child that will be living and working around the Columbia and Annapolis Junction areas. I'll probably try to split the difference and rent in Jessup.

My parents on the other hand are on a fixed income, so I need a place for them thats safe, not to far away from me, and of course decent range reasonable close(my Dads only hobby).

There in NY now and I'd rather them not be a hour+ away in PA, although that does sound leagues better for weekend/holiday shooting visits.

Anyway, any advice? Id like to keep rent max at around $1100 for them.

    Thanks

That's going to be difficult unless you're looking at a 1 bedroom apartment and then maybe not that in the area you're looking for.

    Good luck!

Not sure what rents are like these days, but if it were my parents here's what I'd recommend:

Avoid Baltimore City, most of Baltimore County, Anne Arundal County, and Prince Georges county. All have decent areas but they also have more then their fair share of bad areas, drug problems, and the associated crime.

Howard and Montgomery counties are probably out because of the price range. Montgomery has some other issues even though it has some beautiful areas as well.

Carroll and Frederick counties are your best bets closest to your work area. Both are more rural overall and have lower property values and rents then other Baltimore/DC metro counties. Both are convienent to multiple gun ranges. I would also seriously consider buying not renting. Property values in both are going up and you can prob get a mortgage in that price range easier then a rental. If you get something with in the 10-20 acre range, you can sell it to a developer down the road and they'll put 5 or 6 houses on it while you're sitting on a beach drinking pina coladas.

I also wouldn't rule out southern PA or eastern WV.

I worked in Anne Arundel County for the PD for 25 years. Feel free to PM me for some ideas on good neighborhoods. There are many good places to live there that aren't too bad. Especially in Pasadena at that price range. But it depends on the neighborhood. I wouldn't have your parents live out of state if it were me. You will quickly tire of that drive if you like to spend a lot of time with them. And as parents get older they tend to need you there more often and more quicker, I know. There's no shortage of heroin in Southern PA either.

How old are you parents? I'm assuming they're both retired.

My In-laws used to rent at Waverly Gardens in Marriottsville.

62+ Community. Nice size apartments and community amenities priced very reasonable for senior citizens. This is not public housing. Privately owned in a nice safe neighboorhood with shopping and restaurants right across the street.

Right up the road is the Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore Range.

Another option is consider renting or buying a house with an In-Law apartment or 2 master suites. It can be a win/win for you and them especially if you buy a house.

I'm not a senior housing expert by any means, just walked this same road with my In-Laws.

Very true. I know they wont be my neighbors, just looking for the most reasonable drive possible.

Yeah, thats what I'm actually expecting at this point after looking into this for a few days. My new job will come with a hell of a raise, Im thinking they can just rent in PA for a year or so and then I can tackle that somehow(I know they will resist).

I still need to know the good areas though.

    Bingo. My big fear.

Both retired. My Dad is old enough to collect social security (unlike my Mom).

After doing a quick search, it looks like Catonsville is going to be where they can afford. I only found 1 Basement rental in Elkridge for $1100. The further shouth you go, the more expensive. Catonsville isn't that bad of a ride from Jessup. Sure beats NY.

Another thing the OP needs to keep in mind is health care. As his parents get older, they will need more health care. Johns Hopkins, UMAB, Suburban, and other hospitals in the area are very, very good. There are also a lot of doctors/specialists in this area.

As already suggested, Catonsville wouldn't be bad for them. They don't have school age kids, so that isn't even a consideration. Just proximity to the OP, being in a decent neighborhood, being close to a gun range or two, and being close to great health care. AGC isn't too far from Catonsville and Catonsville isn't too far from Jessup.

The closer the better. Find a low crime area not too close to light rail if you go with Catonsville or Arbutus. The area around Ft Meade might be better. If you like your job, you won't be moving but it is a pain to move your folds. Ask me how I know :(

    Any other advice?

Maybe for future home purchases? I'm already looking for houses a little rough around the edges and I'm already having a hard time.
