Looking at an original late 60s AR-15 semi-auto rifle with pencil barrel and no magazine that is a C&R. Anyone know what their status is in Maryland? Are they banned from being purchased now

Hypothetical at the moment. I wanted to build a retro M16A1 semi build and just learned about the HBAR issue. I found a nice 68-69 AR-15, too expensive because it is almost in perfect condition. Wondering if I should even try and find one

Pretty sure these almost got through in 2013, but there was some last minute secret timeout during the sausage-making where the Dems came back and said no C&R "assault weapons".

Pencil barrel no go if you don’t have a pre oct 2013 lower that YOU purchased.

Only exception would be if you SBR it and retro is not SBR

I don’t know if an HBAR was available pre 1971 to be C&R

I keep thinking of the thread on MD here where a member made 15.9” SBR AKs. Brilliant. It’s the only way I’ll ever get a CAR15 or GAU clone like the ones Brownells is making.

I’ve got a couple of receivers I bought in 2010. So I can buy it but I would have to destroy an original colt c&r rifle and put my 2010 receiver on it, then have it shipped.
I think I’ll forget about it for a while and enjoy some 1800. Good night and thanks for the advice.
    MD will remain safe

    Hmm, that is sad.

    Maybe:
    1. Have the seller ship the lower to your FFL, sans upper
    2. Have the seller ship the upper to you
    3. Transfer the lower as a post-2013 lower, legal only for use with an HBAR upper for now
    4. SBR the lower
    5. Have the lower discretely engraved next to the trigger
    6. Build an SBR CAR clone

Admittedly, that is a lot of work...

A lot of work and you are going to pay a premium for any of those early guns, haven't seen a bonafied pre-68 for less than $3000 for years. You can buy two or three Colt HBARs for that. Your best bet is to have someone like Engage build you a clone. It will have a HBAR on it but everything else will look vintage.
