I recently picked up a Pedersoli Down Under Sharps in .45-70 and now I need some recipes to make it some food.

    Components on hand:

    Fed 210 primers
    Starline and A-Merc brass
    IMR 3031, IMR 4166 and H4198 powders
    Laser Cast 405gr .459" boolits

Purpose is ringing steel at 100-300 yards. Any of you guys have loads you like with those components?

The A-Merc brass is from some American Ammunition factory ammo....out of two different Sharps rifles and a Marlin that stuff shot minute of berm. After a few shots we just made loud noises and empty brass it was that bad.

Will your rifle be able to handle modern loads or more traditional reduced loads. I loaded up a batch using Starline cases,38 grs of Accurate 5744 and Fed. lg.magnum primers for H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic. Friend of mine also loads up using 70 grains of Blackpowder.

40 gr IMR 3031 with 405 gr laser cast. Not a super powerful load but, it will not cause blunt force trauma on your shoulder. I use Starline brass because the Hornady brass from LeveRevolution is short. Just an FYI!

No, it's a Sharps so that means Trapdoor level loads.

Too hot, exceeds max. by 3 grains. Keep in mind that Sharps, Rolling Block, Low Wall, High Wall and Trapdoor rifles need to stay near BP pressures.

Eventually. Thinking of doing a cowboy gun porn thread.

I have to disagree with CombatAK. Firing 45-70 rounds is different in a Sharps.

I've fired plenty of rounds in my Pedersoli 1874 Sharps to know how much 40 grs of 3031 kicks behind 405 boolits. Either hold the Sharps correctly or wear a shoulder pad. Or both!

Have you thought about moving to BP loads? I'm learning more about loading BP rounds from 4570inMD. He shoots Sharps rifles long range often. And he's dayum good at it...

Keep your horizons open. Looking forward to a range report!
