I made up some minimum load rounds for 44 Special and took them to the range today.

It was really mild and I was afraid I shot a squib load at first. I actually took the cylinder off and checked.

I loaded Hornady JHP 180 gr. bullets but they're kind of hard to seat in the case so I'm going to go with 180 gr. Cowboy bullets next with the max load.

I may be looking for a Ruger New Blackhawk in 44 Special next!

I've been shooting swaged Hornady 240gr LSWC over a light charge of RedDot. Very pleasant and cheap to shoot. No leading at my velocities.

For a heavier load i have been happy with MBC's Hi-Tek coated 240gr hard cast Keith over Alliant's Power Pistol. Should be approximately 1000FPS and again - no leading. See Allliant's web site for loading info.

In my opinion there is no need for a jacketed bullet at these velocities for range ammo.

These are being shot out of a Taylor & Co Cattleman (Uberti). I've also loaded both of these in 44 Magnum cases for my Abilene.

I haven't had a chance to reload much lately, so busy at work, but I reload my 44 mag rounds down to a reasonable to shoot load and have a ball. I will have to look in my books for the loads but I like my mags because it gives me the ability to use 44 special or mag rounds in the same pistol.

I have 3 pet 240 loads from about 900 to 1300 fps. I have some other proven light and fire breathers as well as .430 grain round ball gallery loads around 500 fps. The 44 Magnum is the most versatile cartridge around. I built
some shot loads useful up close only, 4-5 yards, definitely not for rabbit hunting.
