I did a temporary setup of my FTM-400 in the car today. I powered the radio with a Li rechargeable battery.

I was pretty impressed with the signal. I was getting 1.2 SWR at 2m and 1.5 at 70cm. I was able to stay connected with the CARA Repeater in Columbia all the way to Odenton without any problems.

Parts come in next week for the permanent mount. I just decided to drill a hole in the roof. I’m going to have this car for quite a while.

Apparently "in case I need to call in an airstrike" isn't the right answer when asked why there's a radio on the counter.

Reception in my basement command center is sub-optimal.

I was able to get some ft8 done from the porch this afternoon.

I really need to get a better antenna placement.

You have 10M and above as a tech. Not much propagation though to work with. I suggest you start studying and upgrade to general.

I'm close to taking my exam and I'm looking at mobile radios. Which band would be the best to start on for a mobile rig?

clearly most traffic is on 2m. But I would seriously consider a dual band (2m/70cm) as they are not much more in price and gives you more flexibility adding additional repeaters.

I really was set on getting the Yaseu FTM-100 but for $130 more the FTM-400DX has been really great. Check the nearby radio clubs to see if they are running Wires-X repeaters. If so the ease of wireless digital radio communications is amazing.

2m has the most traffic but get a radio that will do 70cm as well. The radio I use in my truck is actually a Yaesu HT (ft-60). I have a mag mount antenna with a short sma adapter to go from the antenna bnc to the radio. When I need to get out of my truck I can simply unscrew the sma adapter and screw on a 1/4 wave whip and bam I can move on foot. I will probably get a permanent mobile mount eventually though and it will be a dual tuner 2m/70cm rig.

I’m looking to get started with digital modes but how much can I do as a technician vs general?
    Tech privileges are here:

If your into CW then you can go clear up to 80M. For other digital modes you'll need to upgrade to general. I have never heard digital modes on 10M besides CW.

Go for the general. It's not that hard. I think it took me about 6 solid weeks of studying. What helped me was setting a date, the ARRL general manual and hamstudy.org.

Ugh - I really need to get this damn antenna strung so I can see if it is going to work...
Right now I have to string up my 130' EFHW every time. It's a pain and I don't get much reception with it only being 10 feet or so off the ground. Hopefully another ham with a drone can help me place it better (hint: vette97)

The FTM-100 will be my next purchase. The wife just purchased a $700 iPhone so I think i can swing a $300 radio. I want to start operating from the car. I have 2 other Yaesu products and so far impressed with quality and performance. Here's a list of system fusion repeaters in MD:
