-I've been preaching about the need for new collectors to not just rely on the 'net only for info. Besides the fact that I'm a book worm I find valuable info that just isn't available online. Some might ask "Books are expensive, is it worth the cost?". Yes!
-Case in point. Back in 2013 I snagged a nice German issue Star B that came from a midwest auction. The auctioneer swore that the P38 marked holster was mated to the bring-back pistol. The pistol fit like a glove and marks in the leather lining showed that they were mated for a long time. But it was a mystery as the only reference I had, Leo Antaris' Star Firearms, a seminal work, showed only unmarked holsters issued on the German contract. Friend somd_mustangs, who has mad P38 knowledge, tried fitting his Star B to a std P38 soft holster and no joy.
-Fast forward to a couple months ago. I had been scouring the planet for an affordable copy of Tony Vanderlinden's Holsters and Shoulder Stocks of the World for years without success. Finally found a copy for just under $100.
-Reading through it the other night I run across a listing for a German Contract Star B holster that matches mine to a "T". P38 marked, it seems they were built specifically for the Star. Mystery solved! That's why my rig fit so well but using a std P38 holster was a bust. IMHO the $100 I paid for Tony's book paid for itself in just this one instance.

BTW, I didn't get the other Star B rig. I couldn't log into the auction site with an hour left and someone out bid me. Oh well, I had what I thought was a good, solid bid in, esp considering the holster had an issue (missing mag pouch, which I think you noticed). Somebody was willing to spend more than me. What sucks is that the auction house isn't posting the hammer price so I don't know what it sold for.
Still hurt a bit. Esp. since I passed on another nice item to focus on the Star. But that's how it goes sometimes!

The government hasn't started banning books...yet. Wait until today's millennials get older and into political power and you'll begin seeing official government censorship and banning anything not authorized and approved by them. It will 1984 just a bit late.

Actually governmental book banning has been around for a while. "Banned in Boston!" has sparked sales of books like Lady Chatterley's Lover, Ulysses, and others.

SCOTUS Justice Potter Stewart was unable to define "pornography," but he pointed out that he "knew it when I see it."

Just another reason why it's important not to teach history, if you want control - everything old is new again, and the same old battles are fought over and over. Every generation has its chance to fight for liberty, or decline the engagement and leave it to the Government to handle. Those of us who have been around for a while have seen the Great Spiral playing out again and again.

I am a fan of Hungarian Tokaji wines, and even after searching the net for years to learn more about them, all the information I've found wouldn't fill more than a dozen pages in one hard bound book I have on the subject.

The interwebs barely scratches the surface on most subjects. It's a good place to start your research. Once you've exhausted the web, your "real" research can begin...then you'll learn something.

Bummer. But maybe just as well since the pics were so horrible.
