Could be done. You would have to cross the gas tubes between them, and connect the trigger to the hammer on both barrels, but only charge one.

Then when you fired the first one, it would cycle the second one, so the spent round would remain in #1 with the hammer down and #2 would be loaded and hammer set back. So trigger would then fire #2, leave it hammer-down, and cycle #1.

The hard part would be determining a way to avoid chambering both barrels at the same time...doing so could be considered "more than one round with a single trigger operation" and BATFE wouldn't like it. Maybe some kind of interlock that prevents both hammers from setting back at the same time.

There actually were some early aircraft machine guns that used this type of operation. They all were later considered to be an inferior design, because a problem with one barrel or feed mechanism disables the entire weapon. Simpler & more reliable to just mount 2 guns. Also the Gardner gun from the 1870s or 80s fired alternate barrels, though this was crank-operated like a Gatling gun and not an automatic weapon.

Are both barrels Hbar? If not, if you ad the two barrel together dies it equal a Hbar? Great zombie gun. You blow up one barrel with a squib and you still have the other barrel to save you. Pure jeanyus.

I think the folks at Red Jacket (Sons of Guns, Discovery) did something with a double barrel AR and they crossed the gas tubes to get them to cycle. They had them stacked more of a over/under. really awkward design. if you're willing to grind through it, i think it was in season two.
