14.75" I still wanted a longer barrel, but with it noticeably shorter than 16". It's a weird length, I know, but It just seemed to look good lol

I'm a little confused. With a muzzle device, it brings the length to 15"+. Seems like a lot of paperwork for under an inch from legal length. Nice build, and other than because 'Merica, does 14.75" make any difference? Was it just because any shorter would have needed a massive overhaul of the piston/gas system and cutting a little off the top was much more convenient?

Well - in Maryland, how else are you going to be able to own an AK? In Maryland, how are you going to own a AR that does not have to be an HBAR? Answer; make it into a pistol and then into an SBR.

I've been busy with work and haven't checked in a couple days, so sorry to keep you waiting. But basically what "Calicojack" said was spot on. I wanted an AK rifle in MD that still had that traditional ak rifle look. As far as the gas system, don't quote me on this, but I believe a barrel shorter than around 12" would need a shorter piston installed and it would probably be best to just get a gas block/front sight combo to allow you to make it even shorter. Feel free to ask any other questions! Hopefully I can inspire others In the state to join the ak building fun!

I get wanting the traditional AK look. I have the M92 with a 10" barrel and 29" overall length, and it's an awesome little package. I had to add an inch on the stock when I brought it to Maryland to make it compliant, and it doesn't look too goofy. Thanks for the response.

So anyone have an idea on an AK pistol I could buy
Then get stamp to SBR to 14.5”
Then when stamp comes in, have someone put the longer AK barrel in?
Or put the longer AK barrel in sooner than the stamp comes in while still a pistol

I would be ending up with something like the OP using a Romanian Parts kit and the necessary US made parts for 922r compliance

You can install the 14.5" barrel while still a pistol.

Yup, I did exactly that. I had my short barrel, and a pistol brace so I could still fire it while waiting for the stamp. Also, for the pistol brace, since I wanted a wooden stock, I bought an ak to ar stock adapter and put a kak blade on it, that way I could have the rear trunnion installed and setup for a real wooden stock whenever the stamp came back.
