So for 2 decades, I have been going to RA browns in Westminster, but he seems to be calling it quits soon.

I have aquired a MOA stainless steel 10/22 reciever. Its threaded. So I need a barrel to be threaded, timed and extractor cuts put in.

Anyone around that does that? I can supply the barrel.

wonder if it would be better to have my reciever shipped to MOA and barreled there.

I have been modifying 10/22s for a while. I am not aware of any gunsmiths in MD who specialize in 10/22s. If there is one in state I'm sure someone else will step in and educate me.

If I was going to get a threaded barrel attached to a 10/22 receiver I would send it here:

    http://www.ct-precision.com/
    http://www.ct-precision.com/ruger10-22.html

Randy (the owner) is nationally recognized in the 10/22 community as an expert gunsmith for 10/22 rifles.

Here are a couple of threads from RFC describing how satisfied folks are with Randy's work:

Please let us know how your 10/22 project works out.

So, here is what I am trying to figure out. I have read thru dozens of posts where the KIDD people say threading on is a waste of time. Which I don't believe. So, if I get an aftermarket barrel, does it slide in? How would I get it threaded if the shank is smaller than the threads. Maybe I am missing something.

Per the following quote from Randy's website:

TUNEUP OPTIONS. Add $45 to any Tuneup for Threading barrel and Ruger receiver eliminating the V-block and screw retainer. Does shorten barrel by .75" but makes for a more consistent shooting rifle. (Mostly done to bull barrels.)

I think Randy takes the barrel and adds the threads to mate with the 10/22 receiver which is why you lose .75" in barrel length. Regarding all the KIDD folks who say threading the barrel to the receiver is not needed. My view is that there is less benefit when adding a threaded barrel to an aluminum receiver. But you have a steel receiver.

I am an amateur here. May I suggest that you email Randy and ask him for his suggestions. He works on hundreds of 10/22s every year and in all my years on the RFC boards I have never seen anyone express anything but total satisfaction with Randy's work.

I talked to randy. he wasn't keen on the MOA recievers. Suggested I make sure the holes were correct before investing money.

So, I tore apart one of my old 10/22's. slid the barrel in via the v-block, attached the trigger group and put in a stock (had to drill out a place for the rear reciever hole.

Works flawlessly. So I am going to get a shilen 22 barrel threaded.

I had NO idea that there were gunsmiths who worked on 10/22’s.

To me, that’s akin to hearing that someone has a business where they tie other people’s shoes for them.

    Fascinating.

Well if you want to swap out parts with aftermarket parts then sending it to a gunsmith is not needed. But Randy can take a stock 10/22 and turn it into a real shooter while retaining the stock parts. That's why he's still around.
