Now that the new laws have come into effect, are there any AK variants that are still legal to purchase in MD?

A local dealer told me that you can still purchase heavy barrel ARs, so I'm wondering if this is also the case with some AK variants

I appreciate any insight into the matter.

    AFAIK, No.

All AK variants are banned due to using the AK action.

If I'm mistaken, feel free to correct.

    Rifles, no.

Shotguns, yes. You can still get a Saiga 12 shotgun, which is basically a 12ga, smooth bore AK.

You can still purchase them on the corner of West Pratt St. and South Monroe St. in Baltimore City.

    Bring cash....

The problem is, the linked thread has the MSP letter, which states that sporterized versions that do not meet the assault weapon definition of Title 18 USC Section 921 (a) (30) are not regulated (actually says do not require a background investigation).

That section no longer exists, because the Federal assault weapons ban has been repealed (Pub. L 103-322, Title XI, Sec. 110105(2)).

So there is no way of saying that it meets or does not meet the definition.

Of course, you could argue that if you can find the original definition, that you would apply that.

    The paragraph used to read:

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
    Folding or telescoping stock
    Pistol grip
    Bayonet mount
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
    Grenade launcher mount

I was told by several dealers in the past (under the old ban) that Saiga shotguns were regulated firearms since they are built on an AK receiver.

I know a bunch of dealers treat them as unregulated because they are not a rifle. MSP confirmed this at some point, but I don't have a copy of it.
