  • A few years back my grandfather passed down his Iver Johnson 16 gauge single barrel break action to me. I am curious if anyone on here can help me determine the approximate date of manufacture. The third character appears to be a "1" but I was not aware that they ever mixed letters and numbers. Any info will be much appreciated.

My guess is that it's an "I" that simply got miss-struck. "4621" winds up being your serial number. Now, whether that was the 4,621st made in their all-letter serial run from 1939-1956 on these "Champion" models shotguns, or just the 4,621st in one particular year? That's anyone's guess. Unfortunately, from everything I've read, there's no way to narrow it down more than that at this time.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking maybe the "1" was an "I".

Yeah, they only did all numbers, all letters, or 1 or two letter prefixes, but never a number in the middle of letters. Hence the I. Only other possibility would be a "T" as their serial letters spelled out "Fitchburg" which is where they were located, similar to Remington's "BLACKPOWDERX" codes.
