I have a PT-1911. It's a great gun for the money and it has a lifetime warranty.

I have read a lot of reviews on the Taurus and just about every one seems to love them. The price is almost to good to be true for a quality 1911. I am pretty sure I'll be the owner of a shiny new PT-1911 this time next week.

Get some Chip McCormick custom ten round magazines for that puppy. More power.

I'd probably go with one of the custom smiths. Derr Precision comes to mind...I want a builder with a solid Bullseye background doing that trigger.

It is tough to beat a 1911 built to original GI specs. The only modification would be throating the barrel if you plan on using hollow points.

    And lowering the ejection port.

    And the better sights mentioned.

And a beaver tail grip safety because slide bite sucks.

And a commander hammer because a spur hammer and beavertail don't mix

Maybe a larger thumb safety for more positive engagement.

Some front strap checkering would be nice in a humid day

An undercut trigger guard can reduce muzzle flip

    Maybe some nice custom grips

And so on, and so on....

Hence evolution. Superior design in the early 1900s. The things above make it still a great pistol today. Modern metals help too.

If money was not a concern, what brand of 1911 would you trust your life with? Yes, I’m aware there are more reliable platforms out there, but humor me. I just have a love of the 1911 and its history. It is pure Americana.
Out of the box, I am an STI fan

Honestly I think the mid grade guns in the $8-1200 or so category from makers like ruger,s&w,springfield, colt and dan wesson are typically more reliable with a wide variety of ammo and under adverse conditions then many of the higher end guns where more of your money goes to superb fit and finnish and uber tight tolerances to squeeze out every last bit of accuracy. Ymmv Ive never paid more than $1500 for a 1911 and I dont ever intend to.

I put a pair of Hogue rubber grips on my 1911. I had to slightly modify the grips to handle the ambi safety mine has, but they make for a very pleasant shooting experience.

I love hogue grips, but only put them on revolvers and on one AR. I put them on one of my .357 magnums and .44 magnum. YMMV.

Those are all nice, but throating and lower ejection port are for better function.

The latest Taurus 1911’s I have seen are better fitted (on exterior anyway). From what I have garnered some of their internals are proprietary and don’t play well with other manufacturers’ parts. Can’t say first hand. From first hand experience I know they have a strange way of forming their extractor hook.

Agree with lower ejection port. Although my original 1911A1, and my MkIV/S70 have never missed a beat ejecting a spent cartridge while firing, but ejecting a live cartridge from the chamber has hung up occasionally.

Throating, I disagree with. For starters, pretty much all modern 1911s come throated from the factory. Additionally, Colt supplies barrels with a throat notch similar to m4 feed ramps. But mostly because feeding issues are 99% of the time because of magazine issues, not the gun. And modifying a pistol around a mag is silly. Mags are borderline disposable, 1911s aren't.

I will say, my original 1911 gets fed a diet of hardball. And why not? Even in a defense situation, .45ACP hardball ammo is not exactly a slouch. Sure the custom 1911s I have, and the modern ones handle JHP just fine....but I would contend that throating the barrel is asking for problems in a modern 1911, especially when using hot defense ammo, because of the increased chance of a cartridge failure (less material in the throat means less case support).

Personally, I have tried Wilson, Chip, Act-mag, Pro-mag, Mecgar, Colt, Para, Check-mate, Tripp and Ed Brown mags...Colt and Check-mate are the best, hands down. I have solved quite a few ftf issues with switching mags in lieu of machine work.

And while it is easy to pick up a Dremel and "fix" a feed issue, most should not.
