Quick question, if I were to sell an Ar 15 of mine to a very good friend in Pennsylvania while I was visiting his home. Do we need to go to an FFL like in Maryland or would a bill of sale be acceptable?

It depends. Do you want to commit a Federal felony or not?

It is against Federal law to sell a firearm to a resident of another state without the transaction going through an FFL.

And the transaction needs to be legal in both the state of residence of receiver and the state where the FFL is located.
