Better late than never they say.

A native Marylander, and into my 6th decade now, I come from a family that didn't hunt or fish, or that has a military presence. My dad was a musician (as were my two brothers), so his favorite piece in his "arsenal" was a flugelhorn.
Brother #1: medical discharge from the Navy 1966.
Brother #2: Vietnam veteran, 1st Lieutenant, Army, 1966-70. PTSD. Social outcast.
Me: high draft lottery number in 1970, no military service.

Brother #1 sees handwriting on the wall, and leaves MD 20+ years ago for Colorado. There he becomes a gunsmith, and has been after me for years to arm myself. I've always resisted his recommendation, but I've had my eyes open to what is going on around us. I'm preaching to the choir to tell you, it ain't good!

So I'm here now because the time has come, as I approach my 64th birthday, to do what the 2A allows. It's time for me to prepare for the worst as we hope it never comes. I come to MDS, perhaps more as an observer than a contributor, to gather what I can from your experiences and knowledge. I'm happy to be a part of the group.

Welcome. Have you thought about purchasing a firearm yet? I'm sure we'll have a million recommendations.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes I have. Have a Browning 1922, 32acp WWII railroad police semi-auto. Shot a 9mm M&P Shield a few times. My brother (CO gunsmith) is very high on the Glock 19 as a great, reliable firearm.
I know opinions run wild on make, caliber etc, etc. I'm going to take my time, talk to people, and most importantly get something that fits me. No rush.

That's a great approach. Things to consider in general are:
    1) Purpose for the firearm. If you intend to shoot targets only or if you are also looking to defend your home.
    2) Budget. Make sure to build in cost for ammo, range time, targets, cleaning material, and maybe some lessons.
    3) Amount of time you're willing to commit to developing proficiency. For example, if you want to use a firearm for home defense, you'll need to spend more time shooting if you want to use a handgun versus a shotgun.
    4) Where you live. For home defense, certain firearms are better suited for apartments and condos.
    5) What you can physically handle. Some people are very recoil sensitive.
    6) Will there be other shooters in the house? What works for one person, may not work for another.
    7) What feels best to you. Your brother made a great recommendation for a Glock 19. I shoot a 23, which has the same frame as the 19. I also have a Lone Wolf Distributors 9mm conversion barrel that effectively turns my Glock 23 into a Glock 19c.
Your best bet is to go the the range, rent several models in different calibers, and shoot them. You'll know what feels right to you.
