WASHINGTON - The District government is about to join Maryland and 12 other states in enacting what is commonly known as a “Red Flag” law.

The new law is a statute that would allow officers to remove firearms from people who are believed to be a danger to themselves and others.

The chairman of the D.C. city council, Phil Mendelson, says the votes are in place to pass the measure.

    ....

Allen says, if passed, the statute will allow family members, law enforcement officers and mental health professionals to go to court if they have concerns someone with access to firearms may become violent.

The statute also includes illegal firearms.

Under the new law, family members would be able to go to court knowing the person with access to the firearm will have immunity from prosecution for possessing it.

Maryland recently enacted a Red Flag law of its own, and police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state have been carrying out court orders.

Under Allen’s new Firearms Safety Omnibus Amendment Act, bump stocks would be outlawed in the District. Anyone arrested with an extended magazine would face three years in prison instead of one.

DC to move forward on enacting Red Flag law and ban on bump stocks and "extended magazines."

What a joke. 100% inapplicable to the 25% of DC residents who are possessors of illegal guns, and 100% applicable to the 1% of the DC residents who bother to be legal registered owners.
This is EXACLY why it is important to fight UBC and registration. The only people exposed to malicious non due process confiscation this red flag law allows are the law abiding.

About 95% of DC gun possessors are ILLEGAL gun possessors and this law has no affect on them. If a person you share a hallway with has ever seen an NRA mailer in your mail, they can say they heave heard shouting in your place, even if they have not, and the cops will now come and take your firearm.

What is amazing is DC council is in the same session looking at decriminalizing fare jumping -- which our local PSA police commander has said frisk arising from fair jumping are a full 20% of illegal gun seizures. Literally hundreds of active criminals carrying firearms illegally are caught from fare jumping frisks and they are looking at ending that , at the same time as this useless red flag law aimed SOLEY at legal gun owners.

Sure...a good progressive can recognize the benefits of using complaints, judges and police to do their bidding and make legal guns illegal.

Smart, in a deceitful and unconstitutional way.

If I put a Glock G17 magazine in a G19 compact pistol, does that magically become an "extended magazine?"

    (asking for a friend ...)

That was exactly my reaction when I saw it in the paper. Such BS. Hopefully it'll get struck down in court.
