Hi All, I live about as far East in the state as you are to the West. I drew a bear tag this year, now the search for a place to hunt begins. If you have any pointers, or any info to up my chance of success, I'm all ears!
Never really hunted bear before, I am an avid deer hunter though.
I guess I will start looking at public land for starters.

Once you find a place you can hunt use bread, house hold scraps anything food related other than onions. Bears eat most anything. You can also get a rack of expired bread pretty cheap at Franz bakery or such places. Lots of times the bread is still good just close to or past the sell by date...Just dont tell those places its for bear bait or the tree huggers that work there wont sell it to you. Tell them its for livestock.

Baiting bear is illegal in MD.
    Copied from the DNR website:

    Baiting/Attracting Bears

The use of any bait, scent attractants or electronic calls is prohibited for black bear hunting. Bear hunters are reminded that the use of any bait or scent attractants is prohibited and any potential bait must be removed at least ten days prior to bear hunting.

Sloppily eating bacon for breakfast while accidently dripping succulent and odoriferous bacon fat on your hunting clothes is not baiting.

And I'm pretty sure Neanderthal style eating habits aren't illegal.

    Attractant problem solved.

I liked your C/L ad. Probably going to have to take out a classified ad in a local paper but I doubt the locals who didn't get a permit will reply. :)

Thanks, at least someone saw it. Nothing to lose by giving it a shot. I have no friends or relatives in Western MD. They're across the border in WV, some in Tucker, Randolph, and Dodderidge. Going to check with them and see if they have any contacts in Garrett.

I believe I read somewhere that DNR will also help pair you up with landowners that are looking to have bears removed.

the preseason hunt was where that usually took place. Last year they didnt have one and I'm not sure if they brought it back for this season

I have 228 acres in Friendsville loaded with bear....I didnt pull a permit. PM me if you are interested as I have someone looking at it but he has not followed up with me yet.
