Actually this is going to be a pistol although I am in the rifle section, I will continue anyway...

Going 8.5" barrel. Unclear on what buffer and spring. Also, going to add a can later probably, I expect I will have to change buffer and spring when I do?

    Thanks

I also second the Spikes ST-9X buffer. I use a Wolff Extra Power carbine spring and it works great in conjunction with the ST-9X. Others have used the HeavyBuffers.com 8.5oz buffer with good success too. IIRC when I weighed my ST-9X it was 7.9oz.

Lots of good advice given above. Any of those combinations will work well. I used a Rock River 9mm buffer ($25) and a regular carbine spring. It has worked flawlessly for me.

A 9mm AR does not have a gas system. You will not have to change your buffer or spring when you suppress it. I just started suppressing mine and have had no issues.

    Good luck
