Got a 73 wingmaster in a trade on here that my gunsmith says is ok! It's a little rough, but something I'd like to restore.
I'll keep posting step by steps as I go along. I'm stripping the stock now. Gunsmith still has it and I'll be sending the parts to a NY outfit to reblue.

sb - I used zip strip. 2 tries to get through the main body of varnish.

hvy - my forensics shows the paint applied over a bad or botched cold blue job. as soon as the paint started coming off, the nasty temp bluing came off in clumps. cant have that!!

funny... I am restoring one as well. just did the second coat of tung oil on the stock and forearm. I used duracoat to do the steel pieces and it turned out great. if I can ever figure out how to post pictures on here and re-size them I will post my project as well

Bubba should never be allowed in the paint department.

Nice recovery on the wood. A product/stain called TransTint will really make that grain pop.

Can I talk you into a different recoil pad? A fitted kickeze would be a whole lot more attractive on there.

Cant wait to see it. You're doing tung oil eh? I'm waffling between tung oil and linseed oil.

FiL says theres not alot of difference, but tung oil will last a hair longer. I don't know any difference really, but he likes to use tung oil on walnut.

I am restoring a Remington 550 right now and I will get some pictures up in another thread shortly. I read all 40 some pages of this thread last night. If you don't have a plan already to restore the wood, or even if you do, you may want to look at this. You can get a really good idea just by reading the first few pages.

    Thats a good link. Thanks.
I saw another page where the guy after stripping had taken an xacto knife and masking tape and carefully masked and cutout the checkered sections. This area he then pressed down so that when you sanded you didn't accidentally sand any checkering.
I'm almost to that stage now!

That ole pad doesnt have much give to it. What's a fitted kickeze? I've done limbsavers on mossbergs, etc, but the black doesnt quite fit this gun.

You could probably rust blue it yourself would come out looking very nice.

Yeah, but I'm anxious to see what this bluing house can do. I saw a couple of Ithicas they did for a friend of mine. Spectacular work.

They are going to mirror the bluing, and matte the crown and top of the vent rib.

Limbsaver will will work too. By "fitted" I mean, model specific. Kickeze is a popular model, solid in appearance but very absorbent.
