My kids went through the NRA sponsored rifle safety class/small bore shooting league back in May. They are small statured...too small to use the provided 22 bolt action training rifles the club has. Fortunately, I had purchased Savage Lil Rascal single shot 22 bolt actions when they were very young. The kids absorbed the safety info like a sponge and to say that they shot well is an understatement. Both rifles are equipped with peep sights and my youngest was able to ring the 12" steel gong at 100 yards repeatedly and they both were hitting the 4" and 8" gongs at 50 yards while standing, sitting, and prone. Too say that I am proud of them is an understatement. This week the kids and I were at the range with a buddy, who brought along several different 22 semis...a Ruger 10/22 carbine with open sights and a Marlin Model 60 with a scope. They had never shot with a scope before, but they caught on very quickly. They were ringing steel at 15yards shot after shot surprisingly quickly. The only problem was is that neither have the upper body strength to hold either rifle up on their own. I stood to the side and let them rest the fore end in my hand. They would tell me "up, down, or left, right" and break the shot when they were on target. Afterwards they said that they wanted a rifle that would "ping ping ping ping" as opposed to their single shots. They are able to handle the Savage Lil Rascal's by themselves, but that's about it for now. Does anyone make a small, light weight 22 semi similar in weight and size to the Lil Rascal? I'd love to find one for them since they enjoy shooting semi 22s...I hope to keep them interested in shooting.
Sorry in advance for the lengthy post.

What about a Ruger 10/22 Charger with a bipod? It's not exactly a rifle, but I bet it would be fun for them.

Marlin 795 is pretty light, but I've never handled a Cricket to compare. Length of pull most certainly is longer in the Marlin.

The Henry Survival rifle is very light. (About 3.5lbs) Plus it has the cool factor of breaking down and storing in the stock. The downside is the grip is pretty thick.

    Personally, I learned with a Marlin 60.

Find a good used Remington Nylon 66 or one of the variants. Very light and accurate. My wife claimed mine many years ago.

The Chiappa Little Badger is a small, simple, single-shot rifle that folds up and can even take an optic. It's also very inexpensive.

Try out an M&P 15-22. I remember that if I kept all the “stuff” off it, being composite it wasnt bad at all, and the LOP is adjustable.

+1 for M&P 15-22. It’s light, the 6-position stock will work for any sized person, and you can add whatever AR-type parts you want.

Cost no object there’s the .22 Pack Rifle which is lighter than the Rascal. I think it’s around $400 though but probably one of the coolest .22’s I’ve ever seen.

Survival Rifles have a LOP that’s way too long for youth. Tried for fit at the store and they’re too long by a mile since the whole gun has to fit into the stock.

If it were me, I’d pick up a cheap Savage 64 for $125 and just chop it down at both ends for 16” barrel and youth LOP. That would knock a bit of weight off and balance the rifle better for kids. You could do the same with a 10/22 especially since barrels are easy to replace and used synthetic stocks are a dime a dozen but of course the cost a little more.

Anything above the Rascal my kids need to shoot from a rest but can do the Rascal standing all day (5 & 7). Haven’t worked them up to semi-auto yet aside from the occasional pistol. Still trying to instill ammo discipline with mine.

They already have single shot 22 bolt actions that are factory drilled for scope mounts. They want ones that they can “ping ping ping” the steel with faster lol. Thanks for suggestion though.

LOL. They are in gymnastics and the oldest one can do pull ups and has abs...she does insanity on her own. Gymnastics has made the youngest stronger...that’s what has surprised me about them not being able to support the rifles tried so far. But they are small statured like my wife.

M&P would be a good choice. Cheaper would be 10/22 with the ruger American stock. You can buy compact modules with or without comb. *Picture included is not an endorsement.*

We picked up a "previously owned" Savage Model 64 in the lefty-configuration for MM Jr. The length of pull is about 1" shorter on the Savage than that of a Ruger 10/22, and the angle of the stock at the handgrip is steeper. Seems to fit smaller shooters better.
