I recently bought several Warsport .223 Wylde barrels, sans finish. Any recommendations for a product I can apply myself that will be durable? Thank you.
Do you have an oven and paint gun? Cerakote.
Do you have nothing but a hope and a prayer? Duracoat.
Do you have a few bucks to spare and want a forever finish? Salt/nitrate bath from local gunsmith.
I'd go with option 3, although for most people it's beyond what we'd do in our garage/basement. I've done aerosol Duracoat for receivers and it was fine, but for a hot barrel you may need to use the bake-on anyway. At that point, option 1 if you have the equipment and must do it yourself.
I have used both Alumahyde 2 from Brownells, and a the aerosol version of Duracoat in a can, and both did fine, just don't rush the prep or painting. Once you pop the red button on the bottom of the Duracoat can, it says you have 48 hours to use, if I recall, but its more like 24-36hrs before it thickens up in the can.
