So I should have realized this, but being very light on a Garand trigger (or at least mine)...not so good. On my 2nd clip of the day around round 4 I was very, very gently pulling the trigger past the sear release and managed to get it to double with the recoil of the first shot.

Whole. Eee. Shit. The cyclic rates are just off the charts on these things for a .30-06. It drives it home when you double and have to think for a second “what the hell was that?!?”

I’ve accidently doubled a couple of handguns before and my AR15s and even my 10/22...but nothing like doubling a Garand!

I can’t even imagine an m14 under full auto, even being prepared for it (does the M-14 have a lower cyclic rate?)

Was there significant wear on the hammer and sear?

    Q

Nope, it looks to be in great shape. I think this was just an instance that I doubled it through bump firing. Granted I haven’t put a ton of rounds down range so far with the rifle. About 60.

Uh oh... you are now officially a "rapid fire trigger device" and you will have to remove yourself from MD before October 1st unless you can get ATF to pen a testimonial that you are authorized to own yourself. :-)

I mean, if there were relocation expenses and I could telework for my job full time, I’d be down.

    Not reloads, PPU M2 Ball.

I thought I had it settled in my shoulder pretty well, but I wasn’t gripping the stock very well with my trigger hand and very lightly supporting the butt with my other hand. Shooting off sandbags in case I never made it clear.

I used to own a M1-A that doubled. My brother was shooting it when it happened. A few years later Springfield Armory posted in ads a recall on the rifles. The ad said if the bolt had a specific ID marking or if you set the safety on and tried pulling the trigger the safety would move back and forth to notify them. My rifle had both. I called Springfield and asked if that would cause the rifle to double up when firing...they guy said "Oh yeah". They paid to ship the barreled action to them and I had it returned within a week with the issues resolved and more accurate than ever.

I knew it before I even opened the thread.

You were shooting from the bench. That's why it doubled.

Get off the bench! The bench is a trap!

Get a mat and a sling and a glove. Get down on the ground and shoot prone. Then get up on your hind legs and shoot offhand like a man. Then work out a sitting position that works for your body type.

Position shooting is the key. Your Garand will not double when shooting from positions. It is common for Garands to occasionally double when fired from the bench.

Yeah!...... Shoot like a man! And then figure out how to adjust your sling from prone to sitting so you can maintain the relationship between your eye and rear aperture the same way every time.
Or where your sights need to be when you finally stand up, or from different positions.
    Just doing a little ribbing:)

Pulling the trigger all the way and straight back until it stops can be a big help too. Do your follow up at this time. Sometimes they can triple if the sear is badly worn, and your shooting from the bench.

I have a 1941 Johnson .30-06 that tends to double on me.
I have clean it thoroughly and looked as best I can. Still don't know the issue is.

It is definitely a surprise when it doubles.
If anyone knows a good smith near Frederick for a 1941 Johnson please let me know.

I’ll get around to position shooting. Just wasn’t the day for that. I left my shooting mat at home.

But that is my plan for next trip is a few clips and shooting prone. See if that helps my vertical stringing. I think a high visibility dot on my target will also help and/or not shooting as late in the day when the 100yd line is in shadow.

Bah, you guys haven't seen nothing until you have a MAS 49/56 run off a ten round mag with one pull of the trigger.

My brother was the guinea pig at Fort Meade when I switched from French surplus to handloads. This was before we learned about the firing pin weight. After that, I turned the FP down on my lathe and the problem went away.

You should have seen the look on my brother's face.
