Convert a Garand to accept box magazines?

Now I know this is not funny to some of the older more experienced folks. My father would tell me that converting an M1 Garand is nearly sacrilegious, but I'm wondering if it's legal to purchase a beat up complete Garand and send it to Shuff's to have him do a conversion..... Is this frowned upon by our new laws? It would need to be converted to a .308 barrel and milled out for a magazine. Here's his site address.... http://shuffsparkerizing.com/

What are my options here?

Yes. The M14 and BM59 clones are banned, but an M1 Garand receiver taking M14 mags is neither. If you were to have an M1 receiver milled to take BM59 mags, then you have an issue. Go with his M14 mag option and you're good to go.

I want pictures of this rifle if it gets built, and if possible I'd like to volunteer some ammo to shoot out of it to, um... help... reliability?

Tim does a great job and the Mini G conversions are pretty sweet looking but I couldn't chop an M1 personally.

Wasn't there recently an article in the American Rifleman magazine that showed a box magazine .308 converted Garand? If memory serves, it was a conversion done for the Navy.

Nope, no Navy box conversions. 7.62 NATO Conversions with various grades, yes.

If you have a beat to sh*t M1 sitting in the corner do it.

Yeah I already have a Garand and two M14 clones. I am thinking that I will do it if I can find a beat up Garand. I don't want to deface a fine service rifle..... I have more dignity than that.

So to clarify, If it is milled to accept the M14 mags, I'm good to go? Do I have to avoid a flash hider in leu of a muzzle brake?

You can have the flash hider as long as you don't have a grenade launcher or folding stock with it.
