Where can I find ammo for a 1871 Springfield Trap Door 45/70 government. Would like light loads. I will reload for it but need some brass etc to get started. I know I can order from Buffalo Arms but would like to shoot it this weekend so local is best. Thanks!

I have a handful of 45-70 brass for pickup in Cecil if you have the rest of the components. (probably some trailboss as well. I could part with some berry's .428 350gr plated actually too ;)

Trapdoors made in 1871 were chambered for 50/70/450 (Model 1870) or 50/55/450 (Model 1869 Cadet Rifles).
There was no Model 1871. Do you mean a Model 1873 Springfield in 45/70?

I’m not a fan of going there, but Walmart carries 45-70. Winchester 300 grain, of my memory serves me right. It’s Perfectly Fine to shoot in a trapdoor.

With my recent acquisition of an antique 45-70 rifle, I was told by many more experienced than me to slug my barrel before buying a lot of bullets. Old barrels are often slightly larger. You may need bullets sized to .459 or .460 (or larger). Mine slugged to 0.457 so I just bought 405gr bullets in 0.459 from Brazos and a bunch of nickel plated brass from Grafs (to further help identify them from modern loads.) Going to load them over Varget.

No, officers edition 1871. 100 year commemorative edition by H&R. Found some ammo, thanks Ammo Jon and 85MikeTPI for your help! I am all set for brass, powder and projectiles. Just ordered my dies yesterday..

Ahh, I see. An H&R repro.
H&R took a little liberty with history because there was no production 1871 Springfield Trapdoor in 45/70. The 45/70 was introduced with the Model 1873, but I will let actual history rest.
    The H&Rs are nice rifles.

Run up to Camerons in Oxford Pa. They carry cowboy loads in 45/70 that I run out of my Marlin. They should be fine in that old rifle as they are no where near top of the range for the load.

I stand corrected after looking at the rifle closer, you are correct. It’s an 1873. The humble pie was filling. Lol. Thanks for the history lesson...

Did you get that one from a member on here? I sold one like it years ago and he refinished it , it looked great after the refinish.

No humble pie. For all I know H&R could have made an 1871 commemorative in 45/70. :)

I always wanted the Officers' Model Carbine when I was a kid, but they cost too much. By the time I grew up and had a job, I couldn't afford one - they cost too much. Figure that one out.
    The H&Rs are nice.
