Unlike “assault rifle”, I have always held the belief that a battle rifle was defined. It is a military rifle firing a full powered rifle cartridge.

    And wood and steel construction.

Main Battle Rifle...chambered for a full powered...not intermediate...cartridge such as .30-'06, 7.62x51, .303 Brit, 6.5x55 Swede, 7.62x54, 8mm Mauser and others. A MBR can be bolt-action like a 1903 Springfield or semi-auto like an M1 Garand. It does not have to be select-fire nor does it have to have a detachable magazine.

I have a SAR-48...the Springfield Armory version of the FN-FAL. It's an awesome rifle but heavy. Push come to shove if a battle rifle was needed I'd pick my Armalite AR-10 or Colt LE901SE...they're each lighter and better handling and use P-Mags which are plentiful and easy to source.

    Now...from a fixed position using a bipod...the SAR-48 would shine.

    No love for the SCAR-17?

I have, or have owned most of the offerings in the "battle rifle" category and am convinced the SCAR is best out there with the caveat that you need to be willing to spend the $$$ on an optic that will hold up to it.

    Not a battle rifle.
