We'll get more details later, I'm sure ... but it sounds like an employee of the Discount Mart in Seat Pleasant busted a shoplifter, got into an altercation, which got physical, and the employee defended himself. Alleged perp dead.

The Seat Pleasant police chief says, "The store employee was armed with a firearm and was legally able to possess a firearm."

Interestingly, FOX5 refers to it as a customer having been shot. I'm not sure that shoplifters are, technically, customers. Yeah, yeah, allegedly shoplifting, etc.

Google's street view of the area makes being "legally able to possess a firearm" seem like a really good idea.

Most of the headlines about this are just re-treads from the mostly information-free wire summary report. But they all make it read, until you bother digging, like the employee shot the guy for shoplifting. Homicide investigation under way. No charges yet, lots of witnesses.

Special police officer, not assistant to the regional manager.
Preliminarily, PGPD detectives have determined that Dance had shoplifted a couple of items from the store when he was confronted by a store employee. The employee is a licensed Special Police Officer and carries a current permit to carry a handgun. He was in plainclothes with his badge displayed and his weapon was holstered on his hip and was visible. After the employee stopped Dance to investigate, Dance began to repeatedly punch and assault the employee, at which time, for reasons that remain under investigation, the employee discharged his firearm one time striking Dance. The entire incident was captured on store surveillance video. There are numerous witnesses in this case and the investigation is ongoing. The investigation has revealed that Dance was not armed. The employee has not been charged at this point in the investigation.

From link above: "Detectives are working in close consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. It has been determined that the case, once completed, will be presented to a Grand Jury for review."

I think it could be argued security thought his firearm would be taken or removed . I see this going nowhere in a criminal matter but in a civil matter it seems to have legs . IMHO

Thief gets caught, thief turns violent, security guy defends himself when the dude is wailing on him, thief is dead. What is left to investigate? Give the guard a “Thanks for saving the taxpayers money” ribbon and move on.
