When I went in the navy in 1968 were were issued the match grade 308 M1's. Shot them for 4 years qualifying expert each year until I transferred. We had M1's on the ship, but I don't remember if they were 308 or 30.06.
The 308 were great rifles and I wish I had one now.

Ours aboard ship were 308, that was 70 - 73. The jars had M14's, the CO's guard had a 45.

I just had the CMP Custom shop build a 308 Garand. Criterion barrel, new refinished stock hand picked Springfield action, refinished metal and cleaned up trigger. Very reasonable price. I didn't have the action glass bedded and the trigger will pic up 6 lb. I'll bet that yours will break at 4.5 lb.
Sanners Lake sportsman club has a wood stock military rifle match 1 Thursday afternoon a month.
3 strings of 10 rds in 10 min. from the bench at 100 yds at a reduced 300 yd target.
Your rifle would be perfect for this.

Charlie Maloney was building competition rifles just like that many years ago, there were quite a few floating around out there and they all shot lights out.

    And Charles Maloney's M1 Garand(s) in .308 are OUTSTANDING.

A very good friend had Charles build/rebuild his "Blue Sky" return M1 Garand into a fine Match rifle.
Off of sandbags, using FGMM, it would produce 5/8" groups at 100 yds.

Stunning rifle, as is the OP's!
