AGC has a letter writing app that will let you communicate with everyone in Annapolis. Here is what i just sent:

As an honorably-discharged, retired and disabled military man I am repulsed by attacks on our liberties and Constitutional rights by the legislature and Governor of this "Free State".

Lets have a facts-based and rational discussion on gun control, starting with the premise that criminals and mentally-ill people do NOT obey the law, and that, like President Obama himself has stated, "...no set of laws can stop..." a massacre like Newton.

Fact 1. So called Assault Weapons (AWs) -a purely made up term by Handgun Control Inc.- since a real AW has to be a firearm capable of FULLY AUTOMATIC fire, have been responsible for ZERO murders or shootings in Maryland. Long guns (not AWs) have only been used in two shootings in MD last year - TWO. Not a single one of the weapons listed on Maryland's AW list has been used in a crime in Maryland, with the notable exception of the Beltway Sniper (J.L.Malvo), which were acts of a terrorist (Google his jailtime writings and drawings). Malvo used his AR-15 as a sniper rifle, (single shot). Magazine capacity limits would not have stopped his acts since he could have loaded one round at a time without any magazine attached!

Fact 2. The 1994 AWB was allowed to sunset by Congress in 2004 after it was found that "AWs" were used in only 1.4 percent of crimes involving firearms and 0.25 percent of all violent crime. DOJ has steadily reported a decline in violent crime since 2004, in spite of record increases in the number of firearms purchased since 2008! Nationwide, over 90% of gun-related violence is comitted with handguns and NOT long guns!

Fact 3. Absolute gun bans in Chicago and D.C. have done nothing but create "gun-free" war zones, where only criminals carry guns ILLEGALLY. More children are shot every year in those two cities, than have been killed in all mass shootings in the U.S. combined. Every single mass shooting since 1950, except one (Congresswoman Giffords'), has occurred in a "gun-free" zone. Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens, and yes, children, are left defenseless, just so lawmakers can feel good about "gun control".

Fact 4. Acording to the DOJ's National Victimization Survey, and the CDC, there are over 1,000,000 defensive uses of firearms in the U.S. every year; on 97 percent of these, the gun is never fired, but its mere presence served as deterrent to a crime. You want to punish 99.9% of your constituents for the actions of a few hundred? How is that rational or sensible?

Fact 5. The right to keep and bear arms has always been about the People's ability to keep our government in check; it was never about hunting or sports, which is another propaganda tool of anti-2A zealots. Moreover, in McDonald (2010), SCOTUS ruled, "…individual self-defense is 'the central component' of the right.

Isn't it hypocritical of our public SERVANTS -who enjoy taxpayer-funded ARMED security details - to impose on the People draconian restrictions on our ability to protect ourselves from tyranny and criminals, and balk at the suggestions of armings schools staff (when already every college campus in Maryland has armed security). So I ask, is it really about the children, or is it about the guns? Is YOUR life worth more than my own or my children's?

Sent another letter to all Maryland representative today. Everyone needs to keep writing, calling and hopefully visiting in person if at all possible. Here is my letter that went today:

    Dear Maryland Senator/Delegate:
I am writing once again to urge you to respect and uphold the United States Constitution and specifically the Second Amendment. The Governor’s proposals for an assault weapons ban and magazine restrictions are misplaced and uninformed attempts to address the serious issue of violence in our State. For those of you that support the Governor’s over reaching agenda I implore you to seek the facts. Gun Control does not and cannot solve the problem. This has been proven in Chicago, Washington DC, and during the previous Assault Weapons Ban under the Clinton Administration. Please study the facts! All the proposed measures will accomplish will be to infringe the inalienable rights of Maryland’s law abiding citizens. If you look at the statistics as provided by the FBI more people are killed by hammers than are killed by rifles by a wide margin. If you study the data on handguns and filter it by gang related and drug related shootings you will also find that guns in the hands of lawful citizens is not and never has been the issue. The idea that by passing more laws criminals will suddenly decide to respect them is laughable. Drugs are illegal and have been for decades and yet they are widely available and interestingly the root cause of most gun related violence.
It is also important to set the record straight that there is and has been a ban on “assault weapons”. Fully automatic military weapons have been NFA regulated since the 1980s. Modern sporting rifles and semi-automatic handguns are NOT assault weapons! Currently thousands of Marylanders use modern sporting rifles and semi-automatic handguns to hunt, for sport at competitive events and for personal protection. They do so because it is their right to do so and that right was not granted nor can it be taken away by you our State Representatives.
If you truly want to do something to impact gun violence in Maryland focus on gangs, mental health issues and stronger criminal prosecution of those who have demonstrated that they are violent individuals. Do not make the law abiding citizens of Maryland forfeit their rights under the Constitution of The United States of America in order follow the Governor’s politically motivated agenda.
The concept that new gun measures can be passed that will “protect the rights of sportsmen and hunters” shows a breathtaking lack of understanding of the Second Amendment. Our Founding Fathers knew that a peaceful yet armed citizenry was (and remains) a key to our Nation’s liberty. As a citizen I ask you to put your prepared talking points aside and study the facts. We do not need additional gun laws we need representatives that are informed and that understand the Constitution and RESPECT the rights of free individuals.

    Respectfully,

    WGS

Sir; Thank you for your service.

You have probably already sent that great letter to the Senators and the Governor, if not the link provides a method.

I hope you will also send the letter to newspapers, radio and tv.

    Regards
    Jack

    Took a slightly different tack:

    Legislators,

I do not agree with the proposed gun limitations that are attempted to be enacted in the Assembly this year. The nature of these mass shootings is being driven by a 24 hour need-to-know fearful society that cannot be switched off lest there be less money made by large national networks.

The copycat nature of these crimes cannot be ignored. After World War 2, millions of battle hardened veterans came home to build a peaceful community and they were armed to the teeth with "assault weapons" (a nebulous term that describes most semi automatic firearms built in the last 80 years) and pistols. There were few mass shootings of the modern variety as there was no frenzy of media coverage to exalt the shooter as something to aspire to if you are an unknown who seeks the limelight. that's what media is doing when they put the killers name, body count, weapon used, all over the airwaves, they are pushing the shooter forward as an honor, and every unknown kid with low prospects suddenly becomes an aspirant who has grandeur in his mind as he/she attempts to matter in this personality based society.

If Maryland wishes to improve the reporting of mentally unstable individuals and their prohibition of firearm ownership, that's fine as long as there is a clear mechanism for individuals to be removed from the prohibited list of firearm ownership. I have no problem with this in theory as long as it is well thought out and not some feel good measure that gets thrown into a pile like the shell casings of pistols that are purchased in Maryland, another ineffective measure.

“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.” Plato spoke that and it still rings true today. Do not make criminals of the good citizens. The bad citizens have enough in their ranks that they do not need support, which is what these measures do.

Got a few positive responses and whole bunch more form letters.

I have no problem with folks using parts or all of my letter. I do think that form letters or letters that are copied and sent over and over with out some sort of personalization dulls their impact a bit. I may be wrong about that but who knows? I appreciate the compliments, I am just trying to let them know how I feel and with each writing I am trying to get more and more focused on those that support MOM's agenda blindly. It seems like most of the rplies I get are from representatives who are pro 2A.

I know it is a long shot but perhaps a few of them will start to get what this is about and that it is a critical issue to a huge number of people in Maryland. That's where everyone comes in by writing, calling and visiting in person. Do so with respect, solid facts and a strong committment but most of all in large numbers and just maybe we can put MOM in his place.

Keep it relatively short and to the point. Nobody wants to read a book. The only thing they are looking for is if you are for or against. Do not cut and paste other letters. Form letters are too easy, and are probably often ignored. Personal visit > phone call > snail mail letter > e-mail.

    Here is my latest:

I am writing again to let you know I am completely against penalizing the law-abiding citizens of Maryland with additional, draconian gun laws that will only serve the purpose of further limiting the freedom guaranteed to law-abiding citizens by the US Constitution. The criminals in this state will not be negatively affected one iota by these new laws. Quite the opposite. They will be bolder in their criminal activities knowing that it will be that much more difficult for law-abiding citizens to obtain fire arms. This, in a state with horrible crime statistics even with the strict gun laws already on the books.

The other thing likely to happen if these new laws are enacted is that current law-abiding citizens will be turned into instant criminals if they refuse to give up their constitutional rights.

I, and many other law-abiding citizens in this state, are not going to go away on this one. For those of you behind ramming this miscarriage of law-making forward, you will be spending much more time dealing with the aftermath of any new gun laws than you were knee-jerking them into existence in the first place.
