Ball is stuff like W748. It looks like little spheres or round things.

Extruded is stuff like IMR 3031 or IMR4895. It looks like pencil lead.

Yeah, I know what it looks like.

I couldn't find a quick reference for all of the common powders (similar to a burn rate chart) that says powder Brand ABC Name XYX is ball, flake, or extruded. Might be a nice addition to a burn rate chart.

All the WW powders are ball.

Most of the IMR powders are extruded.

Most pistol powders are ball or flake.

Hodgdon has both. If it is an IMR analog, it is probably extruded. So H4895, which is similar to IMR 4895, is extruded.

But if you look them up on their manufacturer's web site, it will tell you.

    Powder database
Thought you reloaders might find this interesting, seem there's a database for powders that has pictures, sizes, properties of smokeless powders.
Not sure what help it will give reloaders, probably none but I thought it's interesting and needed mentioning.
Not sure all powders are listed but theses a pile of them in the drop down menu.

If you have the Lee Auto Drum, once you set the proper charge, you're good to go. I check the charge every so often against my scale and it is always dead on.

My first try with the auto drum worked great on 2400 powder, then it broke on my second use. Got a replacement part and went to load some pistol rounds with HP38 and the thing leaks everywhere no matter what I do, and wouldn't throw an accurate charge to save it's life. Tried Titegroup and it still leaks, although not as much. I had high hopes but mine is junk.

I'm used to Lee products so I know some require a bit of tinkering, but there's no salvaging this thing. Maybe I got a lemon but I'm sick of messing with it.
