I'm looking into buying a Home defense handgun to keep at my moms house just in case something ever happened she would have something for protection. Her neighborhood is not really bad but it would just make me feel better. I do not want to spend a whole alot of money and I also dont want to get something that is overly complicated as she is not very experienced with guns.

I originally intended to just pick up a .38 Ruger LCR since they are very simple to use/handle. I did not pick one up before oct 1 so the more I think about it, the easiest thing for me to do would be to just ship a CZ-82 with my C&R and be done with it.

Just wanted to get some opinions. Would you guys trust a CZ-82 in your mothers hands if her life depended on it or am I better off getting her the Ruger?

If she's OK with handling it, it would be a fine choice. I personally would take a Cz-82 over an LCR in a heartbeat.

I think she should be able to rack the slide. I'm going to take my XDm over and see if she can rack that slide. If she does ok with it than I might just go ahead and get the CZ-82. My XDm is harder to rack than most guns I have handled so if she cna do that than she should be able to handle the CZ no problem.

get some hollow points. It will make a fine bedside gun.

Strongly agree, although run through some hollow points and find a brand the gun likes. Mine feeds some but chokes on others. Otherwise, a very handy, reliable, safe and accurate pistol.

I suggest Buffalo Bore bullets for SD use. That's what I use in mine and I have tested them in water tests out of a CZ82. The hollowpoints opened up to a big mushroom in the third gallon jug at 21 feet. :D

    I'd go CZ over LCR.

Weight helps with recoil. LCR is a good DAO trigger, but still DAO. Better capacity with CZ. I'd also bet more people could shoot the CZ with greater accuracy than the Ruger.

As far as racking the slide, my wife had a hard time racking it until someone told me to have her do it a different way.

Have her simply hold the slide with her weak hand and have her thrust downward with her strong hand. This way she is not trying to rack the slide like most guys do but rather "pushes" it to rack the slide. Once I showed my wife this method, there were no problems. She actually tells me now she prefers my glock over the taurus 82 revolver I bought for her.....

edit. For a gun that you want to be sure your wife can use to defend herself in the house go with a revolver. Tap rack and bang drills will be tough to have your wife train on. With a revolver I tell my wife to just keep pulling the trigger.

Thats sort of what I was thinking when I was looking at the LCR. Just aim and pull. She really has almost no experience with guns other than a .22lr so I am gonna see how she handles racking the slide and what not and if I dont feel comfortable i'll get the revolver.

Even if she can rack the slide she needs to be able to fix a jam. Thats why I went revolver for her. We have a shotgun but the problem is trying to get the stupid trigger lock off.

She likes the AR though...you might consider that instead of a revolver :D

I picked the buffalo boar flat nosed hardened bullets. I've loaded them in the CZ-82 and a P-64 that I have been concealed carrying until my SIG P938 arrives.
