Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I'm reaching out in hopes of finding someone who can help with changing sights on a P229. I'd prefer to use a sight tool as the sights currently on the pistol are SIG night sights and I would like to keep them intact.

    Thanks

I had the same fear of ruining the vials and was corrected. Even the (respected) gunsmith I went to said he uses brass punches to install sights and no longer uses the sight pusher. I wouldn't worry about it. Just use the punch (and tape). Mine turned out just fine with no marks or damage.

Well I stand corrected. I've always heard not to us a punch on them. Guess I'll give it a shot. Just painters tape and a brass punch?

Yup, brass punch and painters tape is what I used. I did a couple of layers of tape for extra protection but it may have been unnecessary and I had to get a bigger hammer than I thought to break the old ones free.

The removal and the install were actually pretty easy. I also used the largest diameter punch that I could fit on the side of the sights. I laid the slide on an old hockey puck for a bench block rather than putting the slide in a vise while I worked.

Thank you for the advice.
