    Newbie starter bench!

A buddy is getting me started on reloading. He said get a bench first. Here is my small starter bench using left over scraps from other building projects. I had a small area to work with this is the beginning of several pics showing my progress.

    Newbie starter bench!

Had some 1/4 inch hardwood for the work surface and some more extra pieces to make a small cabinet, not very big but what the hell.

Stained the main bench. I am putting it in my office so this way it will look part of the room.

    Newbie starter bench!

The final product in my office. My tool box underneath. A punisher poster for some style. Right now it is just used for cleaning my rifles & handguns. Also for two AR builds. As soon as I can save some $$$ lighting, reloading supplies. Just the beginning.

Almost forgot, my daughter's contribution to the build. A steel cased bullet for the cabinet handle. The bullet was an old key chain bullet she had from a military museum. By the way total cost of this build, less than $10.

Mounted my powder box to the wall. Won't keep fire out too long seeing as it's an old mortar box. But it's ok since it's right underneath a house sprinkler system.

    A couple of suggestions.

If you put a piece of thin (1/4") ply between the rear two legs and attached to the top and the shelf, it will really stiffen up the bench.

I prefer shelves or cabinets on the wall behind the bench. When you are working the press, things will fall off the shelves. And I will be you regret the door that sweeps the bench, as things will accumulate.

I did mine with a matt white laminate top. It makes it easy to see when you drop some powder or a small part.

Also, in general, you cannot make the bench too strong or too heavy. If you get to resizing some longer rifle or magnum cases, you will be applying a LOT of force.

My bench top is 2 x 3/4" ply glued and screwed together.

    Pretty snazzy, no?

    Cheers,

    Doc

DOC, This is awesome. It looks exactly like my closet with the bifold doors. So, you have convinced me that my idea will work. I would love to know how wide and deep that closet is? I have my old kitchen cabinets saved up that were going to go into a garage, but I can put them in.
I am ready to do this, I just have to find a place to put all of the stuff that is in my closet.

    Buford,
    Very nice work.
Pinecone's suggestion about a sheet of plywood to stiffen it up is worth considering. Diagonals for any sort will really stiffen those 90 degree joints.
I'm of the "throw it together and use it" school, but mine is in the basement, not my office.

All the clocks belong to my father. He has been collecting, fixing, and restoring them for over 50 years.

:mad54: Not a single one in the shop has the correct time!!! :lol2:

That's about like my mother in laws house, 6 different time zones in one house.:lol2:

    :lol2:

I keep trying to tell him to get them out of my basement but he just laughs and tells me that its my inheritance.

Pops has one hell of a collection. 200+ clocks ranging from the 1720s-1960s
