Just picked up a 870 Wingmaster I'll be using to hunt with. I have both a 18" smooth barrel and a 24" rifled barrel. I'd like to use the rifled barrel but I have so many 3" rifled slugs I'd hate to have to get more shells. Can a wingmaster handle a 3" magnum shell or should I go purchase some sabot slugs? Thanks

The barrel will fit a 3" but it's not the original barrel. I didn't know if shooting a 3" mag out of this gun would ruin the receiver. I'll play it safe and get some other ammo.

No, it won't ruin the receiver. To safely shoot a 3" shell you do need a 3" bbl. To eject a 3" shell you need a 3" receiver, as the the ejection port is a bit longer. To overcome your problem, you would need to reload roll crimp loads in order to get the 3" performance and still eject from a 2 3/4" receiver, because the roll crimped "unfolded length" is shorter than a folded crimp length.

Or, of course, roll those 3" shells down the road and buy 2 3/4" stuff.
