I was not sure where to put this topic.

History has always been my favorite topic, I recently was watching a show on Prohibition and on January 17, 1920, almost a 100 years ago it went into effect. I always like to think what if an event did not happen? How history would be different today?

What if Prohibition did not happen? How would our gun laws be different today?

Alcohol prohibition resulted in alcohol gangs and the crime and violence that comes with them which directly resulted in severe restrictions on machine guns like the Tommy gun and Browning Automatic Rifle.
Today thanks to drug prohibiton we have violent drug gangs which are responsible for much of the crime and violence in cities and urban areas. Alcohol prohibition greatly increased the size and power of government and if it never happened we would probably have a lot more freedom than what we have today IMO.

Prohibition was the first real attempt to change morals by legislative fiat. It greatly undermined the rule of law - before Prohibition, Americans were a law-abiding people. After it...not so much.

Prohibition also had a side effect rarely noticed...women started drinking. Prior to Prohibition, alcohol was not as closely associated with dining, and just about every recreational activity, as it would be afterward.

Not to mention that Prohibition fueled both a massive expansion of organized crime and government corruption. What had been retail became a wholesale problem. Which we are paying for to this day.

The prohibition of alcohol killed federal income through alcohol taxes and led to federal income tax and increased federal costs to enforce prohibition and fight resulting crime.
    Sucked the whole way round.

Prohibition may well have eliminated alcohol taxes, but the federal income tax started seven years before prohibition.
