...without the special tool... is there a way to do this without mangling the nut, or should I just pony up the few dollars for the tool. I'm not likely to do another build real soon... maybe in a couple of years... thoughts?

I used a strap wrench on one once to get me out of a jamb. I've never spent the time to go back and use the proper wrench and its held ever since

    Ace Hardware.

    Buy a single hook spanner.

    Use the single hook spanner.

    Return the single hook spanner.

Not saying it's right, but you will have a tightened nut.

Or do the right thing and keep the spanner for future use.

In a pinch, you can also use a flat-head screw-driver (I can already hear Chad wincing at that...) - it's FAR from ideal, but it'll work.

    I know, I've done it before... :o

I asked my next door neighbor for a spanner wrench... problem solved... thanks!

LOL, yeah its the first time the scale bas been taken out in a few years. I was just glad that the batteries were still good.

I know it's off topic - but I just had to post this because of the Pinewood Derby reference. This was was taken years ago. My son on the left just this past Friday was awarded the Eagle Scout badge (he is now 6' 2" 230 lbs).
