Is that one of those new ring necked improved 9mm. Just kidding. I would like to know the story on that casing. They were lucky it didnt destroy their gun and injure the shooter. Yeah that is a new one for me.

I've never seen one like that. I wonder if that was a lightly loaded 9mm that was fired in a .380 blowback chamber? You would think the disconnector would keep it from firing but some blowbacks I have had will allow the hammer to fall almost a 1/4 of an inch from battery.

Did a test fit, that's exactly what the fit looks like.

9 x 19 in a 9 x 17 chamber. It headspaces on the case mouth, leaving the ass end hanging out the back unsupported. It shouldn't fire out of battery, but either something malfunctioned or it was a crap design to begin with.

Could have been a 9 in a 40, don’t think a 380 will chamber a 9 round but I’ve heard of accidents with 9 in 40. If no one yelled ouch you’ll never know.

As I posted earlier, a 9 will chamber into a .380, but only goes in as far as the bulge on the case in the picture.

I’ll take your word- prefer not to try that, and good reminder to always be aware of your neighboring shooters at the range.

    I've seen 9mm fired in a .40, it doesn't do that.

A 9mm in .40 will mushroom out at the mouth until it contacts and conforms to the chamber. Usually not 360 degrees around the mouth, only about 1/2 to 3/4 of the circumference, and the base is not damaged at all.

Could that be a 9mm in a .380 that fired out of battery?

I had some .40 mixed into my bag of .45, and got the same thing you mention.

Bulged out at the mouth, but only over part of the circumference.
