your references, I have lived next to my neighbor for 13 years and she agreed to be a reference for me, I was about to submit my application when I thought I would check her on MD Judiciary case search.

She has 2 theft convictions, 2 assault charges and various others.

Took her off ASAP and got another.

My references were all neighbors who work at Ft Mead. I don't have any clearances but I vouch for them all the time with good old DOD investigators. Needless to say they were all happy to help me and I didn't need to worry about case searching.

On a side note I case search all my neighbors on a regular basis because that's just prudent / fun

With tax records you can look that up too.
http://sdat.dat.maryland.gov/RealProperty/Pages/default.aspx

If the home is owned by an LLC you can look that up as well.

Needless to say you have no excuse for knowing more about your neighbors than you ever though possible.

Don't sweat it. I just learned my sister just got a new roommate off Craig's list and didn't even bother to case search him. Said she "talked to his mom" and everything seems legit. SMH *1000

Should I post the link to the sex offender map as well?. I check my neighborhood for that all the time....

Good suggestion to check your references. Maryland makes it easy. For a small fee, you can have a more thorough check performed through one of the investigative agencies.

It's incredibly easy to learn most anything about a person, especially their criminal history. It's your own loss if you choose not to.

Thanks for this. I needed this. I only know a few of my neighbors because I am a bit of a 'keep to myself' kind of person. I have aways help when anyone has asked of course.

Have people been rejected because a reference had been to court as a defendant in criminal and civil issues?

I guess I'd be screwed if your neighbor was mine, only have 1 neighbor.
