I took the Winchester M1917 to the range today and put some greek HXP through it. It shot way left and I did not bring anything to adjust the sight. I missed this on visual inspection but I can tell the sight was visibly right of center. Groupings were OK and not great, but just to see if it was me or the gun, I had my 1903a3 with me and shot it as well and I can say that it must have been me cause that one touches holes at 50 and I was not doing my part today. I have been using a rifle rest instead of dual bags for precision stuff and I think that's not playing well for me. Lighter and more convenient but I'm not getting the precision I used to out of this set up. Especially w/ no rear bag.

    M1917 groups were about 3" @50 yards. 1903a3 were about 2"

No brittle receivers reported for Model 1917s so shoot away. A very strong action.
Mauser's are more prone to cracking than M17's due to the way they were case hardened. Thumb slot when hardened in thinner area between the two larger masses of the rear bridge and front ring.

Next time just pop the bolt and do a quick bore sight, Fs was heavily staked at the factory and may not have been centered correctly during repair or re-barrel.
I use a white soccer ball kicked out about 50 yds and sight through the bore from bags and then peer through the site.
Make sure your hat doesn't tilt the sight front on you!:)
