Wow... that was a booby trap waiting to happen. Glad that you checked it out before chambering a round.

I was astonished when I found the first hole on the rear sight block. I had been looking over the rifle for at least an hour messing with the stuck cleaning rod until I noticed it. It was almost by pure luck that I did.

I think it was an incomplete European Demil job, considering the rifle had just been imported and demilled firearms are more popular over there due to their crappy laws.

I was helping a friend clean some rifles that had just come in

Where did he get them from? FTF?, Gun shop?, online C&R?, Gunbroker, Show?
Did the seller represent it as deactivated?
I would expect if something is deactivated or purposefully non-shoot able, it should 100% be represented as a non-functioning gun.

She got them in with a large batch of rifles that had just been imported from Europe. Nobody else had known the rifle was "deactivated" until I found the holes. It's was the only one that had been demilled. I guess technically since the receiver wasn't plugged, it's not even "demilled" by U.S. standards

    That sucks.
Hmm. I take it you are going to have to inspect the others? or have they already been inspected and cleaned?
I'm curious, did the firing pin get pulled or cut down?

All others were inspected, cleaned and gone through after they first came in. Firing pin wasn't cut or anything. Everything looks intact except the barrel

scary, Did you get the cleaning rod out by pushing through the holes?
I'm curious if one could see the holes when looking at the bore with a bore light.

It's still got my brass cleaning rod stuck in it for now until I have time to get it out later. I stopped messing with it after I saw the holes. I did get the patch wad out. I just pulled it out from the drill hole it got stuck in. The holes are big enough where they can be seen with light.

Tap and plug the holes and mark the barrel and stock "Blanks use only". Then you can get surplus .308 blanks and shoot them on the 4th and New years eve. .308 blanks will work in a 8x57 action if you run them through an 8mm sizer with no decapper in it. I have hundreds and have a blast with my M24/47 with blanks.

Welp, now I got this problem child. Going to clean her up, swap the barrel, and shim/wrap the barrel and action to improve accuracy. I'm thinking about whether or not to scout scope it. Can any here recommend a gunsmith in the area around Harford County who will have the time to do the barrel swap?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I've got an .30-'06 barrel in the same configuration as the K98k.

You could always twist the barrel off, then set it up for .308 or .338 Federal, with another Mauser stock or a sporter stock.

It's value (as far as I know) has gone down the toilet.
Why not turn it into a shooter??????
