So, I have a rear tang for a 10/22 receiver and want to know:

    1. Does anyone have definitive evidence that this tang improves accuracy and / or precision of the gun overall and

    2. Has anyone done an installation and could provide some tips or, for a large pack of beer and a slap on the ass, could work with me to install it?

You might consider posting this question in the "Rimfire" section.

Personal opinion (just experience, no data), but generally accepted:
A well bedded receiver will provide improved precision over a poorly/inconsistently bedded receiver.
This is especially true if you are going to free-float the barrel.
Factory 10/22 bedding is sub-optimal for precision. (What is your current bedding?)

The Kidd rear tang is manufactured to fit into a specially machined section on a Kidd receiver. If you do not have that specially machined section on the back of your receiver, mounting the tang gets more complicated. There are smiths that will machine this type of contour on non-tang ready receivers, but $$$$.

There are numerous discussions of the value of this mod on rimfirecentral.com, and installation videos on youtube.

I my opinion, 10/22 receivers can be more than adequately bedded without a rear tang using standard pillar and epoxy bedding techniques.

Use of the rear tang precludes the use of a cleaning hole in the rear of the receiver that allows easier barrel cleaning.

What type of competition will the rifle be used in?
