    A question on operational briefcases...

As I understand it, if you own a machinegun, you can have an operational briefcase for it, no registration required.

If you have a pistol, an operational case for it would have to be registered as an Any Other Weapon.

In short, MG > AOW > Ordinary firearm. Which makes sense if you look at the transfer tax. $200 > $5 > $0.

But what about an operational case for a suppressed pistol? I own an integrally suppressed Ruger, and am considering cribbing together an operational case for it. Does Suppressor > AOW? FWIW, it's the only Ruger I own, they can't accuse me of making it for an unsuppressed firearm.

    Thanks.

No. You can not put a vertical grip on a suppressed pistol for example. A suppressor does not change the status of the Title 1 firearm. Your pistol is still a pistol. MG trumps everything but a removable suppressor because it *IS* the firearm.

Wonder if you could put a vertical grip on your suppressor however..

A friend of mine used to have one of the real briefcase "KGB" Krinkovs with the briefcase hadle that was actually a top handle for the gun. Full auto and registered pre-86 Class 3. Wicked gun, but one shitty Russian briefcase. He sold it eventually, heaven knows how much he got for that thing.

Off the top of my head :

No reason you couldn't mount a vertical grip to a superssor ( other than the obvious thermal issues).
But you couldn't mount it on a pistol without going the AOW route. Should be ok on a rifle or SBR.

That's my point. As I understand it, the suppressor is legally considered a firearm.
A suppressor is not a firearm. Its regulated like one but does not meet the ATF definitions. A destructive device (explosive) is also regulated the same but it is also not necessarily a firearm (some are like a grenade launcher, but the grenades themselves, also DDs, are not.)
