Of the three. Which and why in the comments. My brother is fevering for a Uberti/Taylor's reproduction 1873, maybe a Winchester. The use will be plinking and fun. Maybe SASS or the like.

Not knowing why he wants the gun, to me the .357 is the most logical. The ammo is widely available and likely cheaper than the other two.

    Targets/plinking? .357 mag

Deer Hunting? .44 mag, .30/30 Winchester,
    .35 Remington

Bear Hunting? 35 Remington, .45/70 Govt.

Variations/crossover uses can certainly be argued on all of these. “Best” is going to be a personal choice, heavily dependent upon primary usage.

I'm leaning that way. He already has a .38spl revolver.

I have a blast with all of my 357 lever rifles. It’s a great lever caliber and cheap when you run 38 Special through them. No real recoil.

I have a Winchester 1866 that is 38 Special only I may part with. Let me know if he is interested in that one. Made by Miroku in Japan. Excellent quality.

.357/.38. Setup properly it would be a good competition rifle if he wants to shoot cowboy matches. 38's are cheap to load for plinking as well. I have one and it's a great gun.

Those aren’t my favorite calibers but .45 would be my first choice followed by 357 and then 44/40

But I do love my 38/40 and all my 44 mag lever guns
