If you were operating a pirate radio station or transmitting during war time if comms were shut down, they might, but then they'd do it license or not.

The only person I know that was visited by the FCC was a guy running 1500+ watts on CB. :D

He later became a ham operator. Legally. :)

I am thinking of getting my technician license. I would like to get involved with MARS and other things.

The one thing that bothers me is the FCC has the power to come into my house and inspect my equipment at any time.

Is it possible to cancel a license at sometime in the future so the FCC no longer has this privilege.

Here is a video describing the realities.

I've been licensed for over 8 years now. I've listened to a lot of ham radio podcasts and talked with a lot of hams but have never heard of anyone getting inspected by the FCC that didn't deserve it.

Usually when the FCC responds to something they take a graduated approach. First they will send a letter asking the operator to stop. Then another letter again. Then they will fine. If the operator persists, then they will do an inspection, seize equipment and possible arrest. In all my years I only know of a few stories where this has happened but that was because the person was operating outside of their privileges or unlicensed and refused to stop even when warned.

I don't know about surrendering your license. Why don't you read through the FCC part 97 yourself and learn it. A lot of bad advice, ham radio included, occurs on the internet. It's always better to go to the source information and educate yourself. This is why I suggest people studying with the ARRL manual in order to pass the technician's test, rather than going to one of these "cram" classes which just teach you the answers. If you don't understand the material you can end up doing something illegal unknowingly and then get yourself in trouble with the FCC.

First go to hamstudy.org. Create an account and take the technician practice test before you start studying. Then get the ARRL tech study guide and read it cover to cover. Then go back and take the practice test again on hamstudy.org. If you log in with an account it will keep track of what category of questions you are struggling with. The ARRL's study guide has an index for those categories then you can go back and re-read. Then re-take the practice test until you comfortably pass. Then go sit for the exam. They offer online zoom tests now if you cannot make it to an in-person exam.

Feel free to continue asking questions or PM me. Hams love helping other hams. Knowledge is what dispels fear.

Answer # 2 - FCC enforcement is spread thinner than a $5 undercoating job . The small handful of enforcement have so many things on their plate , unless you are massively , blatantly screwing up , and pissing off hundreds of people , who filed dozens of complaints , the chance of enforcement rounds off to zero .

Answer # 1 - YES , yes they Do have the *authority * without warrant , without prior notice , to inspect any radio equipment , and any related documents , without any undue delay on the part of the inspectee .

Answer #1 Plus - Whether or not you have a License or not , or if the equipment in purported question does not require license .

    *************************

Has abuse of this authority been happening up to present times ? Apparently not , and amongst the radio community , word would probably spread quickly .

Could things change in regards to people percieved as being part of " the greatest threat to national security " or " formenting Insurection " ? Apply whatever thickness of Tin Foil or not , as you are inclined .

Made a new Ham Radio video,

Cool, thank you. Learned about VOACAP (it runs on Linux!) and Log4OM (which doesn't).

Messing around with FT8 on 2m last night, managed to get a 230+ mile QSO with W1VD in Connecticut. I live deep in a valley and am using just a 5/8-wave mobile antenna in a ground-plane base adapter at about 30 ft. 40 Watts out.

Hadn't seen a bulk charging station ... yet. Grabbed this six-pack of BF-88ST FRS radios for a school activity for MM Jr. Price was right - on sale for $80 from Amazon with free 1-day shipping. I suspect this base will fit my BF-888S radios too. Poking around the Baofeng site, they now have a 6-way charger base for the UV-5R too. I have many of the individual charger stations, and they are a PiTA to manage.

License Exams are being conducted in two weeks, on Tuesday evening, October 26, 2021 at 5:45 PM, by the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club.

    Two things to know:

    1) Due to Northup-Grumman's corporate directives, masks must be worn while inside the museum.

    2) IF YOU ARE SITTING ON THE FENCE WITH GETTING LICENSED - DO IT THIS YEAR. Starting in 2022, the FCC will be instituting a $35.00 charge for testing/licensing. This fee is NOT for the local VE teams or the clubs that run it, it is an FCC thing. DO IT NOW.

    APRS Questions:
I am interested in setting up an APRS weather station on a lake area powered by solar. Can APRS be easily modified to report lake water temperature in addition to the standard reporting items?
Are there any pilots here using APRS to send email and text messages while in flight?
