The message on broadcastify dates 3/24 says "time to pass on to another member of the community"

Of course I find this out just as I want to know about the police helicopter...

HoCo wants to ditch the helicopter to save money. Anyone know the status of this? I thought we shared our helicopter with AA Co?

IDK, but it was circling near the hospital and it clearly had the HoCo logo.

Yes I think it came from Ball. Honestly I’m not sure we can justify having one. Counties should be able to share one as needed.

We do but Howard County is selling it. (Or their share?, I can find out)
Problem for Hoco is now they will have to request air support from AA County and if it’s not available we’re screwed.
Make no mistake, Calvin Ball does NOT like the police department. He’s also wasting money by having a four officers assigned to his protective detail.

First off, thats stinks that broadcastify will no longer stream HoCo. That has been my goto spot for realtime local intel for years

Second, I was at the hospital today until 5:40pm and heard no commotion. Are there any more details available?

Update: Found a news blurb on Patch about the incident

You need understand how the broadcastify feeds work. Unless the agency provides a feed (some do), it exists because someone has a suitable scanner rigged up to a computer and provides the feed. These days, running a feed is a bit more complicated than just 'tuning in a frequency'. Most if not all of these radio systems are 'trunked' using a system of call-groups. There is a bank of frequencies the system uses and a call may hop on any of them with the radios putting them together on the back end. To keep your feed going, you have to keep up not only with the frequencies but also the call-group programming. The folks running the system can change that configuration with the push of a button and then suddenly your feed is either dead or it feeds the dial-a-ride or school buses instead of the police call group.

As for buying a scanner, here is the system you need to program into your scanner:

    https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=1707

It doesn't look like the general PD dispatch channel is encrypted. So if you know how to program your 800mHz scanner with frequencies and call groups, you could listen to most of them.

I am running a Uniden BCD996P2,Whistler 1095 and a RS Pro197 scanners here at home. My Uniden and Whistler can receive all the different typs of radio formats being used by public safety agencies in MD. You can pick up Howard county PS police and fire by using a Uniden BCD996P2,and or newer models and Newer Whistler models as well. Each unit can run you from $350 up to $750 for the latest model from Uniden. You can also get a unification G5 Pager that will do the major radio formats used in this area as well and they will run you about $599 to $699 IFRC. If you want to take a hand held scanner with you I would recommend the Uniden BCD436hp hand held scanner. Also you will need to software to program it and it does help to have a yearly membership to Radio Reference where you can do a direct download of everything you will need to listen to HC. Shoot me a PM if you want anymore info. I have the software for Uniden,Whistler and RS to program them plus the yearly membership to RR as well

The person who ran the HoCo transit busses is a customer of mine. Years ago their feed would pop up on the police feed and you’d hear them yacking back and forth. I saw her one day and I said you know I can hear you on the scanner right? She flipped out and had no idea. I used to hear public works and the snow plows too.

Worst part of losing the broadcastify feed is losing the ability to go back and listen to the archives.

Thanks for the information Traveller. I am looking into a budget 800mHz scanner.

As motorcouchdoug indicated, 'some setup required'. 'Radioreference' is populated by geeks who make it a sport to track what trunked systems use which frequencies and how the call-groups are organized. They feed this into data-sets (code-plugs) you can download to program your scanner. If everything goes right, your scanner will passively behave like a radio in the trunked system: It listens to the 'control' channel and switches to the respective 'work' channel to play the transmissions for the call-groups you selected. In the old days, you knew 'HoCo is on HighBand 145.255' and you tuned that in and that was it. Its a bit more complicated now. If you buy a scanner, I would pick up a bottle (or case) of motorcoachdougs favorite beverage and meet up with him to show you how to set up the scanner.

Shoot me a PM and will help you pick a scanner. Do you want a hand held or mobile base unit? Also what do you consider a budget scanner??? If you have enough also get one that will copy the MD 1st System which is running a P25 phase 2 system with most of Maryland connected together. That way if you travel thru out MD over to the eastern shore of DE and or to OC you can listen in what is going on over their.... The one i have installed in my van picks up both Sussex County in DE, Plus the Whole Eastern Shore starting with AA County going east.. Do a Ebay search for BCD436hp made by Uniden.. Here is link off ebay::::::https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...uniden+bcd.TRS0&_nkw=uniden+bcd436hp&_sacat=0

PS I can program it also
