All politically appointed police chiefs serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority...in this case the mayor. In general, if they don't reflect the attitudes and opinions of the mayor, they don't keep their job. Anti-gun Mayor = anti-gun police chief. Just more of the same.

It's DC...don't expect different and you won't be disappointed.

He was on 106.7 this morning. His comment was something along the lines of "There is no reason to have AR-15 style weapons in our communities." He also wildy mischaracterized the National Reciprocity bill by saying "if you buy a gun in one state, you can carry it in any other." It was only later he mentioned that he meant if you got a permit. He urged people to call their representatives to speak out against it. When asked about gun bans/gun grabbing, he was basically ok with it.

Reality check - Like every other big city Chief , he is apointed by , and serves at the pleasure of the City Council. Following the will of the ( governing body in power ) on certain key issues is a litmus test .

If they weren't smart enough to know what was expected of them , they wouldn't have made the short list, or probably the long list . If they start to go rogue , they get a quick talking to , and reminded how many others would walk to be the next chief. Several Chiefs ago , one made a mildly ( less than anti ) statement, Once . The next day he had another news confrence to announce he mispoke , and didn't really mean what he said , and Policy remains what it was .

( Most Sheriffs are only slightly better off . While true they can't easily be yanked out of office during their term , most of them are dependent upon the support of the leadership of their party for their reelection bids . Only those who have their own , or family political dynasties outside of their nominal Party , can truely shoot from the lip with impunity .)
