I will be swapping out my upper receiver in my ar (556), same bolt, same barrel. Is headspace needed to be checked? I seem to recall someone telling me I only needed to check if the barrel or bcg was changes out. Google turns up everything in between.

And if so, I can assume both go/no go will be needed?

Not sure that it makes a difference, this will be my first time changing the upper myself, usually have a gs do it.

Changing the upper won't change headspace. The headspace is established by the bolt and the barrel extension. The receiver can't affect that. When you have it apart, stick the bolt in there and see how the pieces work together.

Assuming that your headspace is good now, it'll be good after the swap.
