Nice gun, the 55s with the nickel steel were a really unique gun. By the way the bluing came off all the receivers. .30 WCF = 30-30

Looked up the Winchester 55. Only approx 20,000 were made during an 8 year period during the Depression. Apparently they command a higher price than the Model 94, from which it was derived, of the same era. Most were Takedown models, so the non-Takedown models are valued even higher these days.

I called him today after work to report your guys findings. He was pretty excited. He said he doesn't think it's a take down model, but honestly doesn't know. It may have been in the assembled position for 60 years. He also said there is a small scope that was found in the box and it looks like it mounts onto the side of the receiver.

I said he should get it checked out by a professional before running rounds through it. It seems like it would be a shame to potentially damage something.

Assuming it functions, the bore is nice, and there's no rust, he's got a $1000-1600 rifle based on the pics that you've shared and what I see on GunBroker. Likely more if he has the original box.

Btw, there are cowboy loads commercially available for 30-30 if he doesn't reload and wants to be gentle. However, if checks out, it should have no problem with standard 30-30 ammo. The formula/power hasn't really changed, and the Model 94 action, on which this is based, is robust.

With the seam between the receiver and the barrel it sure looks to be a takedown model. The photos are a bit fuzzy for me though.

Got a chance to have dinner with my friend last night and checked out his gun a bit more. That seam looks like it could be a takedown model but it wouldn’t budge. I assumed that if it could come apart it would have some sort of lock or latch.

Here is the pic of the scope and mount. No markings on it.

We were wondering if the scope was added after or some unusual factory option.

The end of the magazine tube will have a foldable lever on it if it is a takedown. I'd bet money that it is. Most were. See video. By the look of the seam on the receiver it is a takedown.

Cant go wrong, may take a little adjusting of the bullet guides to feed both .357 and .38 with 100% reliably especially if you are running anything flat nosed but no big deal.

Nice. Rossi M92s in 357 have been hard to find recently. Mind sharing what you paid for it? They've been fetching a higher dollar on GB compared to previous years.

I paid $556 out the door which is not a bad price. I tried to haggle but their price was firm. I don’t think it was a blem but I don’t know if a blem is marked as such anywhere on the gun or box. I do wish it didn’t have the safety hammer lock but I can get over that.
It will be a good little brother to my Rossi 92 in 454 Casull!

    I think you did well.

Having gotten a "blem" in the past, it's a sticker on top of the label on the outside of the box with the rifle model/caliber description. It could be peeled off depending on how securely affixed.

However I wouldn't worry about it. I had to search to find what the blem on mine was (and possibly got it wrong), and other than the blem, the rifle carries the full warranty on function.

I wouldn't worry about it. Frankly with Rossi I never could understand why some were blem and others not. I have had non blems come with scratches and blems look peerless. Given the number of blems Rossi moves through its distributors sometimes I wonder if its a sales gimmick to dump inventory without affecting mainstream distribution channels (or keep their distributors from protesting).

That tells me I priced mine fairly at $525. Mine is octagonal barrel with case hardened finish.
